U or GR Tron in Current Meta?

My LGS' meta kind of reflects the current meta. It seems to play 1 or 2 of just about every deck in the format. With that in mid, would Mono U or GR Tron be stronger in that meta?

I'd say that GR Tron, being the more powerful deck, is best suited to a wide open metagame. You can get a lot of free wins by simply casting Karn Liberated on turn 3, where U Tron fights for almost every win regardless of how good its draw is.

Having play tested both I agree with GlistenerAgent. I'd also like to add that U Tron is a lot harder to play because and requires more knowledge of what your opponent is doing. Counter the wrong spell can lose you the game. GR Tron doesn't (usually) require a super in depth knowledge of your opponent's game plan in order to win.

Well, playing it at 80% doesn't require too much knowledge. Playing it at 95%, however, is hard, as is any deck.

GR Tron is the more powerful deck. UTron isn't bad, but as GA said, it doesn't have many free wins. If budget is a concern, UTron is significantly cheaper.

Also, both decks offer different playstyles. GR usually wants to rush into Tron and play Karn. UTron can do that, but often focuses on controlling the game while assembling Tron (a blue Mana source often precedes the assembly of Tron lands). If you're not solely looking for the stronger deck, make sure you take into account your personal preference.

I do play UTron (I fall into the category of playing something I enjoy and can sometimes win), so I can try to answer any specific questions for that deck.

I play U-tron instead of the GR-tron.because of budget and prefered playstyle.I like the control and to fight for my wins. feels like you earned the win instead of just searching for tron and cast karn on T3

I can't say that you never get that "I play this and win" feeling with UTron. When I set off the Mindslaver lock, I just sit there and smile until my opponent realizes that I won.

I also wouldn't summarize GR Tron as Tron -> Karn -> Win. Counterspells exist, as does Blood Moon (but that affects both decks).

Another thing to note is that if you have certain cards that you absolutely despise, and Blood Moon is one of them, consider that it affects GR Tron much more than UTron.

UTron is what I play, since its significantly cheaper than GRTron.

In my opinion, Tron got a boost with Ugin but tron is the stronger of the two in terms of typical matchups. I designed a deck with Ugin and karn and a plethora of counter magic to just nerf my opponents plays until I can win or slaver lock them out till they concede.

As ducttapedeckbox pointed out also, Blood Moon hurts Blue Tron much less as it doesn't really hurt your counter spells and you can still grind out a win.

TheAlexGnan ~ yeah. I'll admit I don't particularly enjoy winning with Tron like that but a win is a win.

I agree with Bellock86. The 'Slaver lock isn't the most enjoyable win condition, but it makes the deck much more consistent at winning. I don't think it's any worse than resolving Scapeshift or Splinter Twin though.

I play GR Tron and love it. My LGS also as a wide variety of decks. A good example would be this past Saturday, I played in a local tournament coming out in 1st place beating a twin, living end, infect, and bogles. As people are saying above me Karn Liberated is a fantastic answer. Along with him and Oblivion Stone , the deck is pretty solid. Its one of the most fun decks I have played as well. Getting to cast Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is a great feeling.

As budget is concerned its not a cheap deck. Once mine was said and done and also I had NONE of the cards for the deck, it cost me around $800 to build so if your committed to it then its a solid choice. This however is just my opinion. :)

Budget isn't really an issue if I don't want it to be, I just broke a few decks apart and have a bunch of trades for cards, and can spend a little bit of real money if I have to.

RG Tron is a deck which has a good win percentage, but a heap of bad matchups. You need to pilot the deck really well to beat a heap of strategies, but once you understand how the deck functions, it shouldn't be a problem against anything that isn't Burn or Twin.
