Should i play my Tron deck or my Soul Sister deck? (my fnm deck lists are set up almost exactly as you'd see at a pro tour)

Pilz_753 says... #2

It depends. If there're many Pod players, I would stay away from Soul Sister, the matchup is basically unwinnable. If you don't know what will be there exactly, just play what you enjoy the most.

Just play 4 copies of Treasure Cruise and 56 Island . I hear that the way to go now.

It's just FNM. Play the most fun deck

magicnerd0815 there's anywhere between 2 and 12 pod decks at my fnm on any given modern event, my soul sisters deck stops them comboing off (i gain life equal to the amount of times they combo multiplied by how much damage they can do) meaning it's lifelink beat down vs non life link beatdown

tyforthevenom if you have only one sister they can still combo. But even if they can't combo it's still creature deck vs creature deck and their creatures are just way better.

game 1 my removal is better, they all keep the removal sideboard... also they don't have anything to flat out beat Serra Ascendant if i manage to get it online

October 31, 2014 9:16 a.m.

I'd say what does the rest of the field look like? If it's literally all Pod, play either and dunk on them.

it's between 10% pod and 50% pod also candidates are UB Fae, Mono Black Undead Horde, Splinter Twin, Jeskai Control, Jeskai Ascendency, Modern Blue Deovotion combo, Ad Nauseam , Delver, Red Deck Wins, Burn, Storm, Jeskai Storm, Tron and affinity

October 31, 2014 9:31 a.m.

I play to have fun. My deck are mostly block constructed cause I don't change them much after rotation. But, to me they are still really fun to play, if nothing else to see how my jank holds up against "tournament" decks.

October 31, 2014 9:46 a.m.

In all honesty that field sounds horrible for both those decks lol. With that out of the way, maybe Sisters, since most of the decks seem to try and just avoid the battlefield to attack life total?

October 31, 2014 9:52 a.m.

I have to agree with everyone else here, the Pod match is really hedged against SS. Pod does maindeck Abrupt Decay and Shriekmaw (unless they are awful players, in which case it shouldn't really matter what you play), and maindeck Orzhov Pontiff is becoming more common with the recent meta changes, after boarding it's only gonna be worse. Soul Sisters can't prevent a combo kill from Murderous Redcap (they just kill your sisters, then kill you) or Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder .

Then again, RG Tron isn't really much better in that matchup, and the U Tron variants are just ok, not particularly great, so play whatever you enjoy more.

October 31, 2014 9:53 a.m.

Then you also have Paths for the Twin, Tron, Ascendancy, and random creatures decks.

This may the wrong place to ask the question, but if Pod is so popular, why hasn't it either been restricted or simply answered? Mind you I'm a new player and have never faced a pod deck myself.

reverendvile777 kiki pod mainboards those cards? i didn't know that

October 31, 2014 10:01 a.m.

Without Pod in play, it's not the greatest deck. So it's not oppressive by any means. It's just popular, because it's skill intensive, but also tutor effects are powerful no matter the limitations.

October 31, 2014 10:02 a.m.

Ah, ok. I figured getting rid of the Pod would pretty much end it for them, or make it difficult. Either way, for FNM just play what you love.

October 31, 2014 10:05 a.m.

I was referring to Melira pod, generally that's the Pod deck you'll see 95% of the time. I almost forgot Kikki Pod was a thing tbh. If it's a lot of Kiki Pod then you should be fine.

kiki pod is the main deck at my fnm, coz it aparently won bng pro tour or something like that.... but it's won every fnm for the last 4 months

Pack Torpor Orb in the Side? or Suture Priest might fit your deck better.

October 31, 2014 10:21 a.m.

Torpor Orb shuts down his Soul Sister lifegain triggers.

If you want something to help with Kiki pod that's not completely useless in other matches, I'd go with Suppression Field . It doesn't completely stop them but stops them from going infinite and really hurts a lot of the things that deck is going to try to do.

I'll point out that Melira Pod is unwinnable if they find a Pod, which isn't too unlikely. Tron kicks Melira Pod's ass, so if you actually want to win rather than have fun play that. Though Tron is pretty fun to play anyway.

reverendvile777 You realise that Torpor Orb can't shut down lifelink or Martyr of Sands ? It's also an easy removal target.

October 31, 2014 7:45 p.m.

JexInfinite

Pod into/just cast Qasali Pridemage . GG unless you have multiple soul sisters to counteract the 1,000,000 Restoration Angel s or Zealous Conscripts that are about to bitch slap you. And without the Soul Sisters lifegain, you will eventually crumble to their superior creatures if the Orb stays out (post board, Serra Ascendant is just gonna eat Path to Exile s all day everyday, and Martyr of Sands is card disadvantage for the sake of lifegain that will not matter in the long run that gives no additional value, on a useless body for attacking).

Perhaps you're not very familiar with the matchup. But regardless, if it was viable, I'm sure more than 2 decks would have made a top 8 with it by now. (only one Soul Sisters deck has top 8'd with this setup in a real life setting since mtgtop8 was established. The other was on mtgo which is pretty much meaningless as terrible players get lucky and top dailys all the time). Source

Anyways back to TC, you're just looking at bad matchups all around. Both versions of Pod have so much hate for Tron and Soul Sisters (a weak deck in general) just can't match the explosiveness and resiliency. If those are the matchups you expect to see, it's gonna depend on you outplaying them in a very uphill matchup (which is very possible). Good luck!!!

Went tron coz i know it better, came third, scores were 2-0, 2-1, 1-1-Durdle, 1-2. (Scores are mine on the left opponent on the right) durdle was against pod and only lost to double cast sowing salt

October 31, 2014 8:58 p.m.

Nice! Gratz!

reverendvile777 I am completely aware that the pod matchup sucks. Torpor Orb also shuts down the Resto combo, and Zealous Conscripts . The reason the Pod matchup is so bad is because of the 'basically a Demonic Tutor ' nature of the deck. Toolbox has, and always will be, fun, and pretty decent.

In a meta filled with aggressive decks, Soul Sisters is easily a better choice, but Tron is way better in grindier environments.
