correct me if i am wrong Thoughtseize does say target player, therefore could I target my self? If yes is there a modern deck that uses this for a reantiomation deck? Or is there a better turn one play for a reanimator deck?

There are better ways to pitch cards in to your graveyard, especially ones that don't hit you with so much card disadvantage. It does however come up from time to time since reanimator decks are black by nature, and will often use Thoughtseize to get hate cards out of their opponents hands. So it can be used in a pinch, it's just not plan A usually.

It does however illicit one of the best "ah, crap" reactions out of your opponents when you declare "Thoughtseize targeting myself".

The main reasons it isn't done:

  1. You have to spend Thoughtseize itself. This would be justifiable if it weren't for the fact that
  2. You have to discard a card, which means, in conjunction with #1, that you're losing two cards from your hand, plus the land you need to play T1 in order to cast Thoughtseize . So a T1 setup with this card would mean you're starting on 4 cards in hand and risking quite a bit if your opponent is on the play with blue.
  3. You need to reveal your hand, so your opponent knows exactly when you're bluffing (you probably shouldn't Thoughtseize yourself into a bluff) and exactly how you're going to be reanimating whatever you pitch. Against control, this is basically a surrender.

Epoch's points are precisely why I would not play the deck, however, a turn two 'brand just seems like so much fun.

But, as stated, a controller player on the play would basically ruin the whole thing.

I believe this strategy is commonly referred to as "glass-cannon reanimator" since its super easy to disrupt, but super good if it isn't.

There's no benefit in thoughtseizeing yourself when you can just use Faithless Looting

I mean, if you're running Simian Spirit Guide you can rock the manaless dredge start by starting on the draw and dropping Griselbrand on the end step.

...why not use something like Raven's Crime if you really want to discard? Why Thoughtseize which makes you lose life and reveal your hand?
