Realistic speed of Erayo, Soratami Ascendant

Modern forum

I'm curious as to how quickly Erayo, Soratami Ascendant could be played and flipped in the modern format? I was looking through cards and saw Eidolon of Rhetoric and recalled the Ascendants ability, at first glance this looks broken but I can't think of any way to flip the Ascendant before T3 or 4.

Any Ideas?

You could flip it T1 with a nut draw. Polluted Delta>Island+Simian Spirit Guide + Gitaxian Probe, Gut Shot, Mutagenic Growth, Surgical Extraction.

Realistically I'd say establishing your lock T3/4 is fine but I think it still looses to Abrupt Decay.

i mean with a deck with several cards like Gitaxian Probe, Serum Visions, Mystic Speculation it wouldnt be difficult to consistently find and flip. those cards would also allow you to find the eidolon quicker. yes it loses to Abrupt Decay but if youre that heavy combo, you maybe could use cards like Faith's Shield to protect it. if you splash black you have discard to pull out their hate preemptively. there are a few options.

You cast erayo on T2. T3 you cast - Serum Visions, Gitaxian Probe, Lightning Bolt, Gut Shot, Mutagenic Growth, or something else. You flip T3.

Also bare in mind this is probably just worse than Kira, Great Glass-Spinner in some ways.

Curse of Exhaustion is a little more resilient than Eidolon of Rhetoric. Though it does come down a turn later, it doesn't lock you into 1 spell per turn. Also, for a consistent way to flip Erayo, maybe try to chain some rituals? Turn 2 Pyretic Ritual/Desperate Ritual into Manamorphose into Erayo, Soratami Ascendant into Serum Visions (or any other 1-drop) plays and flips Erayo. That's the nut draw, but the concept is the same, and is used here just like it would be in Storm, except you only need your storm count to hit 4.

Also, a similar deck idea exists here, but uses Knowledge Pool instead of Erayo.

Curse would actually be a good idea, then I child play with impunity. Though the glass-spinner isn't as complete, it could be used for an extra layer of protection.

I think the hardest part of this is that it looks like it would take a good deal of cards to insure a combo that itself doesn't win.

it doesn't win on it's own, but the only card that can stop it once locked (that is actually played in modern) is Abrupt Decay.

There was an awesome Erayo Monastery Mentor deck a few months ago. I'm not sure it's quite feasible though.

Erayo affinity... Lol

Actually yeah, affinity could do it pretty fast:

T1:land, Mox Opal, 2x Ornithopter, Erayo. She flips immediately as she resolves.

T2: land, eidolon.

T3: Memoricide name Abrupt Decay. It will take more than Sean Connery to escape this prison.

That's of course a perfect hand, but that would be amazing.
