No-Banlist Modern Ideas Needed!
Posted on June 6, 2017, 1:33 p.m. by GeminiSpartanX
So a local shop is running a no-banlist Modern event at the end of this month, and I'd like some ideas (with accompanying decklists preferably) of what I should expect/play. I know I can't play the broken affinity deck since I don't own those cards, but I think I could put together most other lists with minimal additional cost. What are my options?!?

I'd love to play a 12-Post or Stoneblade variant:
I would expect to see Infect (one of the best decks), Affinity, Twin, Storm, maybe Pod, 12 Post, Burn, Dredge, Stoneblade variants, etc.

Storm. You've got everything you need to go off. Your card selection is that much better. Your rituals cost 1 mana and scale.

Elves is another strong deck due to having Skullclamp, Deathrite Shaman, etc. It can go off t3 everytime. Also pack 4x Mental Misstep no matter which deck you bring, card is the most broken PoS there is.

Sinist3r ... Unless you're playing a cascade-oriented deck.

NBL Delver is one of, if not the strongest deck in the format. You get cruise, probe, ponder, preordain and the like, all while being able to control the board with a 3/2 flyer beating in.
Its also rather cheap to build, sans the lands

DarkLaw well that's common sense... but it doesn't change the fact that the card is absurdly strong.

There's so much degenerate stuff you could do that this needs to be a format in of itself. A more busted Legacy.

Jeskai Ascendancy combo may also be a curveball. (Its a pet deck of mine!)

iv been in a debate about this before thinking caw-blade or a variant of it would be the best remembering old standard jace.
but after proxy testing me and my friends came to a conclusion Preordain etc. made crazy consistent storm/twin decks. almost unbeatable

Where's this local shop...? Might have to bring out G/B elves with Glimpse of Nature... Go off on turn two ;D

Judging from all the suggestions here, modern would be a much more diverse format with no banned cards. Just look at all these viable strategies presented here, that would not function with the current banlist...

Well, I was hoping that I could get a few more lists that I could peruse to see what looks good. Blazing Infect and Storm were what I was leaning towards, although after talking with the store owner, he said the last time they had a no-banlist modern event it was won by a fair UB mill deck!

My only guess is that he was lucky with finding all of his Archive Traps in his opening hand with a fetchland-heavy meta lol.

AFAIK U/R Delver is one of the best decks in the format. Not only are you packing 4 Mental Misstep like a lot of other decks, you get Treasure Cruise, Ponder, and Preordain to make sure those Delver of Secrets Flip(s) flip.
Backed up by Spell Pierce and Mindbreak Trap, and you're golden. You just play Delver of Secrets Flip or Monastery Swiftspear on turn 1, then grind your opponent out of the game when they try to do broken things that just don't work through all of your countermagic and removal.
