Modern Mono Green Devotion

a guy at my fnm has made this decklist green beatdown but when i asked "why not run all 8 copies of leylines it gives you free devotion" they looked at me and it was obvious they had a brainfart... so why not run both green leylines as playsets in a deck devoted to devotion? if you get they in your opening hand it's free devotion count.

But they do not do anything. Gaining life is bad and gaea's effect is decent, but not necessary. Plus, the space for them is limited and you never actually want to draw them.

If you have 2 leylines in your opener, but no nykthos, do you keep that hand? The answer is no, because devotion does not do anything. It needs something to utilize it. Starting with 2 leylines in play and 4 devotion means you start with a 5 card hand, which is terrible. It wasted space in a lean deck.

If the deck got disrupted by lightning bolt, it would not be a playable deck. It is actually not at all disturbed by it. An occasional BTE might bite the dust, but this is usually barely noticeable.

Burning-Tree Emissary is just too long to type out sometimes.

Don't play Leylines in your green devotion deck. The thing is, there are eight cards that will do more than them at any time. You need to be OK with getting your spells countered, because if you play four Leyline of Lifeforce , you are cutting cards that help you win the game. The deck is very tight, and you need every card to be doing something strong.

i understand that but.. "cutting cards that help you win" is exactly what control does to anyone's deck

And you doing it yourself is saving control the trouble to do so. There is no room in the deck for shenanigans, as the combo takes up entirely too many cards.

As a combo deck, you need to be OK with walking into a counterspell. If you can fit in protection, that's great, but green devotion can't put in cards devoted to making your deck less bad against control. Against other decks the card does nothing but boost your devotion, which you should already have plenty of. Eternal Witness is usually the deck's means of beating disruption.

combo deck???

i'm talking about mono green beatdown where's the combo in it?

September 1, 2014 10:55 a.m.

Oh, I thought you were talking about devotion, since you did mention devotion count.

In an aggro deck it's even worse. You need to be beating them down, not stopping counterspells. The Leyline should be Strangleroot Geist . Trust me, it's not worth it.

they use devotion count to get massive creatures, hence why i said devotion but closest thing to a combo in there is Burning-Tree Emissary into Burning-Tree Emissary into Burning-Tree Emissary into Burning-Tree Emissary into Wall of Roots

What massive creatures do they use? Craterhoof Behemoth ? Khalni Hydra ? Primalcrux ? Then it's a devotion deck, and MGD is a combo deck.

Maybe sideboard 1-2? Vexing Shusher could do the same thing on the other hand without being constrained to creature spells.
