Khans of Tarkir in Modern

Modern forum

If you feel that a card spoiled from Khans of Tarkir will make an impact on Modern, feel free to post on this thread.

The fetchlands are obvious, so I'll get Flooded Strand , Polluted Delta , Bloodstained Mire , Wooded Foothills and Windswept Heath out of the way now.

Utter End may see some play in B/W/X decks.

September 2, 2014 11:38 a.m.

We haven't seen all the charms, but looking at Sultai Charm I think they may make an impact. Even if only in sideboards.

Utter end is ok. The one that let's you dig through 8 cards is great. Could be used in eldrazi decks.

I think you'll see See the Unwritten in Tron decks and Green Devotion.

Sorin, Solemn Visitor : B/W Tokens / Midrange

Anafenza, the Foremost : POSSIBLY Pod / G/B/X

September 2, 2014 12:06 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #7

Pod could play abzan Ascendancy.

September 2, 2014 12:08 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #8

i thought that too ChiefBell but it's an enchantment so i doubt they would as there's no real way to tutor it.

September 2, 2014 12:09 p.m.

GlistenerAgent says... #9

Everybody said Athreos, God of Passage would be good in Pod, and it was pretty obvious that he wouldn't be after a closer look. Anafenza is actually reasonable. She helps persist creatures when you're on the beatdown, and is relevant against Scavenging Ooze decks or the rare reanimator strategy.

September 2, 2014 12:10 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #10

It won't make a huge impact but Abzan Ascendancy is gonna give Junk a boost.

September 2, 2014 12:11 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

Yeh the enchantment is also good at keeping persist stuff alive and buffing your entire board. It also means that when you pod a creature away you get a token. Notice how it's when a creature dies jot when it enters the battlefield. You'd get a token for sacrificing finks.

September 2, 2014 12:11 p.m.

Abzan Ascendancy isn't too great. It would likely be a sideboard card, and you don't want sideboard cards that don't really break any matchups (Lingering Souls was tried, and didn't have good impact). Thoughtseize , the removal suite and the one-of bullets like Thrun and Reclamation Sage all have specific impacts, and I'm not sure where the Ascendancy would fit in.

I've actually been thinking with sorin, mardu acension thingy (i can't spell) and the like a Mardu token deck is very possible now

September 2, 2014 12:12 p.m.

Dying to Abrupt Decay is also relevant.

September 2, 2014 12:13 p.m.

Everything dies to Abrupt Decay .

You play creeping corrosion. The number of times I've won against affinity with that.

September 2, 2014 12:40 p.m.

Thank god there are no cards that say "infect loses" on them. if there was an explicit Infect hate card, I would cry.

September 2, 2014 12:52 p.m.

Try casting Creeping Corrosion off of a Chandra, Pyromaster ult, it feels amazing lol. Especially when it's the 10th card.

Spellskite MB game 1 typically says Infect looses.

Game 2 it'll eat a Nature's Claim for sure though..

September 2, 2014 2:09 p.m.

It actually depends what deck is maindecking the Skite. I don't bring in Nature's Claim against Birthing Pod .

I think people are forgetting one important detail we often forget when new cards are spoiled: What do we cut?

The ascendencies are pretty good, sure. But what do you take out of existing decks to make room for a three mana enchantment? Never mind the fact these things cost three different colors of mana.

Same goes with the charms. Not even good charms like Crosis's Charm or Esper Charm see frequent play in Modern. The three mana is really prohibitive, despite their power.

It only gets worse for anything four or above. At four or more mana, it better be on-par with something like Birthing Pod or Cryptic Command . I think the closest thing to being Modern playable so far is Sorin, Solemn Visitor because he fits into a deck previously lacking in a powerful four-drop, besides Elspeth, Knight-Errant .

September 2, 2014 8:42 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #43

Well, it's not like Crosis's Charm is legal anyway...

September 2, 2014 8:45 p.m.

sylvannos says... #44

Good catch, GoldGhost012 lol. I saw Modern border and was thinking Modern Legal. Regardless, Bant Charm , Jund Charm , Esper Charm , Naya Charm , and Grixis Charm don't see that much play.

September 2, 2014 8:56 p.m.

Jund plays the Charm sometimes because it's versatile. I know WIlly Edel likes it. You're right about the other cards. Bant Charm was played in Counter-Cat in a meta heavy with Storm and aggressive decks, and the upcoming charm cycle will be played if the meta is tailored to their modes.

September 2, 2014 9:07 p.m.

Dalektable says... #46

...I take no damage and counter any direct damage? Says the TurboFog player :)

But on the topic I think some of the cards will have an impact. Like others have said perhaps the charms, Sorin 3.0 will see play in B/W Tokens, See the Unwritten screams Tron or some MGD deck to me, and Howl of the Horde seems like it could possibly go into storm?

Femme_Fatale says... #47

Sultai Charm ? DEFINITE BUG INCLUDE.

I love it. Absolutely adore it. Works in more situations that Maelstrom Pulse doesn't. Obviously we will still side in the pulse against multicoloured heavy creatures and token builds, but still, I love the the Sultai Charm . It can even filter out an unneeded card for more draw.

Mardu Ascendancy I really like for a Dega aggro build. It looks beastly.

September 2, 2014 10:22 p.m.

bennybubbles says... #48

Ankle Shanker for the win. RBW3 for a 3/3 with haste and whenever it attacks creatures you control gain first strike and deathtouch until end of turn

September 3, 2014 6:22 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #49

I don't think a 5 drop that only does things if you have an established board state is suitable in modern.

I also dislike 3-drop killspells. Maelstrom Pulse is kind of slow and clunky, so is pact sometimes. That's why I don't think Sultai Charm will see much play. However instant speed card draw is beastly.

September 3, 2014 6:33 a.m.

You all have also glossed over the fact that the previous charms were all ally colored, and only having enemy colored fetches probably made them unplayable in anything but Jund, which needs the color fixing anyway. Versatility is prized in a format where you may have 3-7 dead cards game 1 in different matchups.
