Is American Superfriends viable?

Modern forum

I love playing with planeswalkers, but I'm not sure if American Superfriends is a viable, competitive branch of modern. Thoughts?

Viable sure. It'll be slow so heavy control would be a must.

Could it be competitive? I have a list of my own, just not sure what the general opinion of Superfriends is.

Well, Jace Beleren is insane, Ajani Vengeant is amazing, but I'm not sure there's much else beyond those two. It would have to basically just be a UWR control deck with more walkers than usual.

JexInfinite hit it pretty much on the head. Unfortunately for that strategy is modern is very fast. Superfriends is usually really slow, so like I said and Jex reiterated, its going to basically be a control build with a few extra walkers. Possibly some combination of Jace Ajani Gideon Elspeth Tamiyo. Thats about it. If you do it right, it'll be pretty competitive, but it will just barely pass for Superfriends.

Junk walkers would probably be better in modern, or BUG. Gain access to Doubling Season and ramp. Plus Garruk, Apex Predator .

You'd lose control, though. Hmm.

Junk isn't without control. Classic control does usually refer to counters but who cares about counters when you can rip a chunk of spells from your opponents hands before they even get the chance to play them then blow up whatever they manage to get on the field?

With the banning of [Birthing Pod] all decks are burn or infect or twin. I tried American SuperFriends it didn't work. Even with red to bolt the pesky small creatures.

Strictly speaking a super friends deck is not remotely competitive. If we take the Jeskai Control list for example, removing pieces to implement more walkers would be disastrous because you would be sacrificing spots that would normal contain burn or counter spells. Furthermore, anything outside of Jeskai lacks viable Walkers to build around.
