How's Modern Doin?

Modern forum

So I have a couple of 60 card decks that I built, which I won't share because I'm not allowed to in this forum.

One is Esper Fliers. The other is Rat Discard.

I built both decks to be modern legal because I wanted to one day bring these decks to an event.

I really don't anticipate on winning. I'd like to 50/50.

That being said, to those who are in the current modern scene: do you think fliers would fair better or discard?

After looking at both your decks, I would say that your esper flyers deck is more likley to be able to 50-50 a FNM.

It plays more creature interaction in the form of Path to Exile and the disruptive creatures in this deck are better than the disruptive rats form your other deck. While it still could be optimized, I believe you will have a decent chance to achive your goal.

Orzhov Disruption is a good way to 50/50 and gives a clear path for upgrades. Think High Priest of Penance, Tidehollow Sculler, Castigate etc. type disruption and clear path to upgrading to better discard (etc.) as your budget dictates for a better win%.

Resource denial is 50/50 against most matchups, its not too expensive (especially for enemy colors), and its' upgrade path is easy (and frequently reprinted). It's not a rat deck by any means but can it still easily be discard themed. Bonus points if you make Pillar of the Paruns a viable inclusion.

Flooremoji, thanks for digging through my messy list of deck brain vomit to check out the builds. However, the 8-Rats decklist was very out of date. Since that Red/Black build I switched to Dimir and then to mono-black. It's currently up to date as of 30 minutes ago, although I imagine your critique will still stand as the rat discard is a bit forced and campy. Although, as the deck description states, mono black rats was the very first deck I ever played when being introduced to magic. That brew of old was more casual and lighthearted and included the likes of Ogre Slumlord and whatnot, but it cemented rats in my wizard brain.

Last_Laugh, thanks for the tips on getting into disruptive magic (especially on a budget), but for me discard would have to be ratty for sentimental reasons.

After taking another look at your rat deck, I can see that it does look a bit better :)

It's main advantage will be it's better mana and in the case that you run into some combo decks.
