Getting into Modern. What deck to start off with?

Modern forum

So I've been playing Magic for just just over a year now and have been on this site for a year, and I haven't even really jumped into modern yet. I've literally only been playing standard and occasionally EDH. Only recently have I been looking into modern more and more. Also because my friend is starting to build a modern deck (infect). My question to the T/O community is what is a good deck to start off with? One that is fairly easy to master.

I am not necessarily looking to build a budget deck, but it wouldn't hurt obviously. The max amount I'd be willing to spend on this deck would probably be $250 (going to university in the next week so I'll probably need to save my money as much as I can).

I'm not looking for this deck to be the VERY best, but I want it to able to do pretty well. A deck between Tier 1.5-2 would be ideal unless of course there is a Tier 1 deck that is pretty cheap.

I also have no preference on any specific archetypes yet so combo, aggro, midrange and control are still in the question.

Mono U tron.

I think that Ohthenoises has a budget tron deck for those who are interested.

I have a U tron that is my actual one in paper and one that I've worked up that's more budget directed.

I Fight For the Users! is the non budget list.

Budget U Tron is the budget list.

That post aside, what types of decks do you tend to gravitate towards? There are modern options in a lot of different archetypes that I can help you with.

White's my favourite colour so preferably involving white somehow. Disregard what I said in the post, I really don't like control, and I don't want to play any Infinite combos like Pod or Twin. The standard decks I play are almost all Aggro or Midrange so I guess my thats my play type.

The closest thing to tier 1 budget deck is burn.

If you want to play a white deck you can probably build hate bears for $250

lol 250 is very very low for modern. That being said Infect hates Spellskite and no matter what deck u decide to build, I suggest some Spellskite on the SB.

U could build a decent deck in basically any mono-color that won't be a tier 1 deck but certainly capable of winning u games. I wouldn't advise Tron vs Infect though lol :/

Tokens is fairly cheap to put together and should do the trick vs infect no problem. if you'll except a sub-par splash. 4x Godless Shrine and 4x Isolated Chapel Maybe a some Caves of Koilos and 1 day a Fetid Heath U could actually pick up the Modern Event deck and be off to a good start. White has some of the best SB cards in modern too!

Against Infect I would also strongly not recommend Tron, I only linked it because I was asked to.

Burn is cheap and will punish infect to the max. T2 Eidolon of the Great Revel v.s. infect means that their Mutagenic Growth hits them for 4, it's just downright mean.

My version of burn is not budget but here it is: Making Parasite Gods Blaze.

I'd strongly encourage to use this resource. Mtgtop8 pulls in all of the top8 data from events. (It can sometimes take a while for events to be listed but hey.) You can get good ideas for something to build from there.

The modern event deck is a reasonable purchase for getting into modern. You could use it to play tokens, or you could turn it into Soul Sisters. I would recommend against mono white hatebears, but G/W hatebears is pretty awesome, though I don't know how budget friendly it is.

If you want a combo deck that is not like pod or twin, my first modern deck was Eggs. It totally counts as white because it plays 1 plains and 8 white spells!

The deck doesn't need to be good against Infect, the only reason why I included that my friend was making an Infect deck was to indicate I didn't want to build an Infect deck lol. Burn seems good, I looked at the mtgtop8 website and burn got 1st at GP Kobe. I do have a decent amount of cards from it too. I have 8 playsets of shocks (missing Breeding Pool and Watery Grave ), so i wouldn't need to spend money on them and I have a bit of Painlands as well. I feel like Soul Sisters is a solid choice too, because I think the only expensive card is Serra Ascendant , am I right?

depending on how you define expensive, Windbrisk Heights and Path to Exile (soul sisters runs those, right?) are worth something, though if you consider those bank breaking, maybe modern isn't for you.

B/W/R burn is quite possibly the best deck in modern right now (Boros Charm and Bump in the Night !), though people don't like playing it because it's burn and burn is stupid. Don't know how budget friendly it it, but mono R and R/x burn are cheaper, possibly worse, decks that still get you a reasonable amount of bang for your buck.

I wouldn't consider Windbrisk Heights and Path to Exile to be bank breaking. When I'm playing standard I do spend a bit of money on cards so I have cards I can trade in for too. But I am liking the idea of burn, not sure which variant though yet but as I'm looking at the deck that won GP Kobe I'd be willing to make that deck, I have a decent amount of the cards and Arid Mesa is one of the cheaper fetches. But I'd probably have to wait for the price of Goblin Guide to go down first. Yeah it might be a little over my budget but its an eternal format I'd be able to keep the deck forever

Oddly enough Burn (which is huge right now) worst match up is Souls Sisters.

My friend's first modern deck was a budget goblin aggro. I don't have the list, but apparently it is fun to play. I started out playing storm, a deck that is actually relatively budget because most of your spells are commons or uncommons.

Pod doesn't have to be a combo deck. There's a version that's just aggro - and it does very well.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure I'm going to build burn probably similar to quesobueno123's or maybe exactly the same

@Casino647 if your looking for mono white and somewhat budget I believe Soul Sisters would be the way to go. It isn't tier 1, more like tier 1.5-2 and does decently well in most metas since it isn't really expected that often. Here's a link

Casino647 Awesome! Glad I could help, if you build the same tell me how it works out for you!

Check out the post I made under Traders labelled "Selling Modern Decks." All three of them are under $300 and provide good options for people just getting into Modern.

Burn, soul sisters, b/w tokens, mono black discard, Naya aggro(with the new fetches) are all solid starter decks for modern. And with burn or naya you will have a lot of cards from standard too!

August 31, 2014 6:11 a.m.

smash10101 says... #25

Naya aggro really wants goyf though... goyf may hit your opponents way too hard for his 2 mana, but he hits your wallet even harder.

Jojja says... #26

Wants and needs are two different things :)

You can run Zoo without Goyfs and if they get a MM2 reprint at rare you can add them. But the deck works well without them. The only real money cards in aggro Zoo are fetches and goyfs. And with fetch reprints and goyfs being none vital the deck is affordable and plays "fair" magic.

Guys did you not see that he already picked @Jojja and smash10101?
