Foul-Tongue Shriek: is it playable?

Modern forum

Hello everybody. As the title says, do you think that Foul-Tongue Shriek can be playable in modern or is it just a win-more card?

Let's talk about it: imho, Foul-Tongue Shriek can be considered a sort of black Lightning Helix in creature-heavy decks and it's cheap enough to be actually playable in every build including black, including GB-Elves, Rakdos Aggro, BW-Tokens and Affinity. But can it actually find place in these decks? Elves already has a lot of lords to buff their attackers permanently; Affinity struggles to use the similar Throne of the God-Pharaoh, which is also an artifact; RB-Aggro (and every other deck) must give up slots that can possibly be used for Fatal Push or Claim .

Please, tell me what you think about it.

The epitome of win-more. If you're swinging with enough creatures to make it impactful and not winning already, something is wrong.

I think really the only viable deck it could be used in would be golgari elves. And it would only be a two of. It would end up compromising too many valuable slots as more than that, which certainly kills the odds of getting it when you need it. And you run the risk of pulling and having to bottom it with collected company. Plus it would be dreadful to have in your opening hand. So at best i think its a fringe win-more with potential to do more harm to your strategy than good.

I used it during origins standard in my Gb elves deck as a 2-of, and combined with CoCo hitting Shaman of the Pack and an attack with all the creatures and tokens, it actually did help put away some games faster than I otherwise would have. Against decks that had larger creatures (but fewer of them), it helped win through an otherwise stalled board.

However, I don't think it's good enough in modern. If you need the lifegain in modern elves, Essence Warden is the better choice since it can turn sideways or just gain life without putting other creatures at risk. Many modern decks have plans for creature-heavy decks, so it's reliability is lessened. Modern is powerful and fast, so I don't think you'll get the time to cast a card like that with a big enough board to make it worth having your aggro deck be less consistent.

Who knows until you test it out though. I've kept it on my watch list since it's been in standard and didn't get rid of my playset. Try it out and find out for yourself! (Then tell me if it works so I can use it again lol!)

As an Abzan Elves player I would stay far away from it. It reduces Collected Company hits and usually it's a worse Ezuri, Renegade Leader/Shaman of the Pack, and is card disadvantage.

Depending on the deck (and the matchup) it can be necessary or win more.
Stuff like turn 2 tokens, would probably welcome any way that increases the deck mid game.
