best way to build tron?

Modern forum

Ok so I have emrakul, ulamog, kozilek and karn and I want to build a tron deck with them only problem is is that there are so many tron varients that its hard to determine which is the most viable. My question Is how would you build a tron deck with those cards in it? Modern legal of course.

There's really only 2 viable variants, or Tron. The latter is more inclined to play a playset of Karn Liberated (a 4-of must, he just wins if uncontested) and the Eldrazi while the former resembles a Control playstyle. Thus, the variant is typically slower and relatively cheaper than the other strategy.

Looking up those decks help a lot, and I recommend going to MTGTop8 for some example lists.

There are three ways of doing it.

Uw tron runs the same stuff as U tron, but also has gifts ungiven, Iona and Unburial Rites to win the game.

U tron runs stuff like Condescend to dig into eldrazi or tron pieces.

Rg tron is the best varient due to it being a midrange destroyer of a deck. It plays all the artifact cantrips it can and ramps into Karn, Wurmcoil etc

What's the point of the red In RG tron? Don't you think it would run as well just being mono green? I mean I understand it runs pyroclasm but surely you could cut a color to find a replacement right?

Well, it also has a more versatile side.

RG Tron wants Tron online turn 3. U Tron wants Tron eventually but isn't trying as fast as possible to get it. In many ways, U Tron having Tron turn 3 is one of the worst situations the can be in. U Tron wants blue more early game.

A big part of RG Tron sb is so it can counteract/survive Blood Moon. This card ruins RG tron's plan, not so much U Tron.

Do you think a mono green tron would be viable at all? Not to sound cheap but I really don't want to have to purchase a playset of grove of the burnwillows,I know itd be possible to run basics or shocks but I'm the kind of player that knows if there are better options for a card I will end up purchasing it one way or another and I know im going to have to run 4 karns already.

Yea, I've seen mono G tron before. Not as good as RG tron, but it's a thing. Lighter manabase.

Just run Karplusan Forests. They're a dollar or something.

The only problem is tron doesn't want to deal damage to itself since its threats are high cmc creatures and if it takes longer than normal to assemble you wont want to constantly be dealing 1 damage to yourself when your wide open, that's why grove of the burnwillows is a must in RG tron.

You're rather often not paying for colour...

My friend has r/g tron and uses stomping grounds, it works just fine for him, as it topped a ptq

I run a blue tron build (or I'm trying to anyway) and so ive done a lot of research on it and what people have said so far is spot on.

U Tron, like my Ugi-Tron build or the I Fight For the Users! by Ohthenoises want to control the game UNTIL we hit tron and start spamming threats every turn (though controlling the game with counter etc is still important).

Tron wants to get to Tron as fast as possible and just kill you quickly.

I've also seen some rouge Tron builds (mine actually started that way) but you lose a lot of consistency/staying power when you dilute the counters base.

The first 2 are definitely the most viable but what I like about mono U tron (in order of favorite reason to least) is

1) it's cheaper to build (not alway but a lot of the time because land base is a lot more forgiving which helps a lot)

2) it suits my playstyle better

3) it's a little (not much) more customizable with what you run. Like me running 3 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon AND 3 Karn Liberated. That's a meta call because of what I see at my LGS. Lots of aggro type stuff so ugin just hoses them if he lands due to wiping their field for a paultry 3 or 4 loyalty.

Totally your call seuvius. Welcome to tron my friend. We fight for the users.

May you never be mana screwed.

I will say, a turn 3-5 Ugin just wins you the game unless you're playing against Twin or something similar.

RG tron is better than mono green tron because it has access to Pyroclasm and has more options for its sideboard

Ohthenoises ~ yes. Yes he does. I can attest to that from my testing of the deck on untap.in.

He's the bane of a lot of decks. One of the things I like about him so much is that his + and - abilities synergize VERY well.

Turn 4: exile most if not all of their board. End turn

Turn 5: + ugin to probably kill any creature they just played.

Value.

If I'm against control, I usually side out 2 or 3 of my Ugins for Sundering Titan as that can just brutalize control lists due to the demanding mana base.

8vomit uhhh this meta is moving to a more midrangey thing. Pyroclasm doesn't do a whole hell of a lot.

January 29, 2015 9:57 a.m.

I would basically write what Bellock86 has already said.

Ugin is a bomb though, I've had numerous people scoop once he hits T3-4.

Dhominus says... #19

The issue about Ugin is highly dependant of what meta are you playing in. He's a powerhouse against heavy board presence (coloured one), what makes him a nightmare against Hatebears, Bant Auras, Zoo, Merfolks, The Rock, Abzan or Jund midrange (against those last three, you might have trouble playing him as well... Merfolks are really fast and screw your Tron lands into islands, and BGx will probably make you discard him before you have a chance to play him with Thoughtseize and Liliana of the Veil).

However, he's nearly useluss against Twin, Affinity, Burn, Scapeshift, Tron (any one of them) and Jeskai Control.

I feel compelled to point out the supersecret notsecret tech I figured out for U tron.

Monastery Siege in the sideboard for burn, jeskai control (for their burn), and B/G/X

Ohthenoises that is very helpful. Looks I need to get a couple for my board. Lol

Personally of all the established tron decks I like UW tron the best. May not be as established as RG or mono U but It has certain lines of play that can lock up the game even better than the other versions. Iona, Shield of Emeria and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite are just auto wins in certain match ups and being able to use Gifts Ungiven and Unburial Rites to get them out quickly while still having acces to the tron engine is amazing. Also having access to Path to Exile, wrath effects like Supreme Verdict or Day of Judgment and counterspells like Condescend is nice as well and help you survive to the late game.
