Best approach for Gifts Ungiven

Modern forum

Hey all!

So Im trying to get into Gifts Ungiven for modern and am wondering what the best approach for the deck is. Would it be a linear approach like Gifts Unburial Rites, or is it better to sac consistency for more interplay such as using a gifts package alongside Thopter/sword, Witness/Command, Crucible/Edge? I have zero experience with the deck so I am unsure what the best approach is, thanks for the input!

I mean absolute full spike best approach? Storm. You have enough redundancy in ramp spells, past in flames, and a wincon to fetch those as a four card package.
If you aren't into storm, thopter/sword is the next most consistent gifts deck that has seen results in tournaments... but that's a tier 2 - 2 1/2 deck at best.

Unfortunately for control players, the best way to Gifts is to just play Storm.

However, if you are ever dedicated to actually play Gifts, the Unburial Rites version I'd say is the best. It has the biggest "I win" factor to it, so I'd say go for that. If you want some sweet value, do the Thopter/Sword variant.

Gifts is one of those weird explored but not really explored styles of deck, so that plays a factor in less tournament results.

TL;DR Play Unburial Gifts, only if you are okay with a non top tier deck.

I have a couple of gifts decks on my page of you want some lists for what the decks would look like and get an idea of how they would play but as a gifts player who played when dredge was big, the graveyard hate really cripple your game plan. Its a fun deck idea if you have early game interaction so if suggest something with green in the colors.

Thanks for the input so far guys. It seems like the rites package is a good way to start, but it seems like most strategies need the graveyard. Are there any solid non-graveyard based things to tutor up to try and combat the sided in hate?

Not really. By nature of how gifts works, your opponent is going to bin whatever cards are good against GY hate, and then hate them out of your yard. It's a natural weakness of the deck

Hmmm, oh well, checks and balances I guess lol. I guess maybe it could side to a more traditional looking control deck but even then that may not be the best route
