Modern forum

Saw a YouTube video with the top 10 most underrated decks, number 1 on there was abzan but on it was also lists like "pingers"

What is your top 10?

myhairygrandma says... #2

I believe living end is under played.

I don't know why abzan is listed a the most underrated considering it's one of the most popular decks and certainly one of the most powerful. Seems suspect to me, how old is the video?

To answer the question, living end is pretty great along with 8-rack, which against some decks just flat out wins.

April 10, 2015 1:16 p.m.

I second myhairygrandma's vote. Living End needs to make a resurgence.

My apologies for neglecting to mention that

10 months ago means abzan wasn't getting play so that makes sense. Living end is nuts.. I played it recently at an open series and went 3-1 but I had to leave early :(

myhairygrandma shh keep your voice down they might start using graveyard hate

April 10, 2015 1:27 p.m.

myhairygrandma says... #9

The format is mostly in our favor since living end hoes twin, affinity, abzan, infect and bloom titan. Burn is the only top tier deck we struggle with.

April 10, 2015 1:32 p.m.

@myhairygrandma do you have a deck list?

April 10, 2015 1:38 p.m.

Why is 8 rack called 8 rack? I'm thinking of making a Rackdos deck. My vote for underrated deck goes to mill

April 10, 2015 1:39 p.m.

@canterlotguardian not yet. But i'll put one up right now.

Living End, 8Rack, Elves, Bogles, Hatebears, Mono- Devotion, Assault Loam, and TarmoTwin are the eight I can immediately think of.

April 10, 2015 1:45 p.m.

I also have hatebears and bogles :D Here's the living end list I play Living end

Geist Midrange, Esper Control, Grixis Control (especially Cruel Control), Skred, Four color Control, Bogles, Zoo, Tokens, there re a lot which should see more play. Collected Melira is also a super sick deck!

Matt_The_OGRE says... #16

8 rack and tron eggs would get my vote.

April 10, 2015 2:20 p.m.

8 Rack gets it's namesake from that fact that the deck's main win condition is The Rack, of which is essentially has 8 copies of via Shrieking Affliction. I'm a big 8 rack fan and feel it's quite underrated and I'll second the Living End thought. Did you see LSV's idea for a Splinter Twin/Living End hybrid? It was nuts XD He basically crammed in 4 Splinter Twin, 4 Pestermite and 4 Deceiver Exarch as well as I think a 2 of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker into a living end list as a back up win con...it worked surprisingly well O_o

April 10, 2015 2:27 p.m.

My personal pet deck has always been Mono Green Stompy though. I love that deck to bits and I've had really good success with it...at the FNM level >_>

April 10, 2015 2:29 p.m.

@BlueEyesRedMage check out my link to my living end list in comment 13. Its a refined version of the lsv list. (:

Living End survives graveyard hate because Ingot Chewer etc. and the fact that most graveyard hate doesn't even hit it. Grafdigger's Cage does nothing (the cards are played from exile) and Scavenging Ooze is too slow and mana intensive to keep up with you.

April 10, 2015 2:36 p.m.

beckhr says... #21

It technically was not LSV's idea, I believe that it was Nathan Dennis. That's the earliest I can find. Nathan Dennis's Splinter End Living Twin

I am seriously in love with this deck, especially after watching LSV play with it yesterday. I think I'll put together a list and toy around with the mana base and sideboard, it looks fun. Three ways to combo is luxurious.

I'd say the most underrated and fun decks are the already mentioned Living End and Genesis Wave. Genesis Wave is really, really fun, powerful and pretty good. It can just win the game out of nowhere.

April 10, 2015 3:30 p.m.

1) Skred Red

1.5) Blue Moon

2) 8Rack

3) BUG control

4) Storm

5) Merfolk

6) Hatebears

6.5) Vial Death and Taxes

7) Enduring Ideal

8) Ad Nauseam

9) Eggs

10) Dredgevine

Decks that use similar strategies (hatebears and D&T, Skred and Blue Moon) are divided into half places.

KillDatBUG says... #24

Dredge Reanimator gets my vote as the most underrated deck of them all. Golgari Grave-Troll gave the deck the boost that it needed, as a deck that's trying to assemble the Unburial Rites combo or is trying to beat face with massive Golgari Grave-Trolls. Sideboard's real nice, too, with some sweet graveyard-based spells in Ancient Grudge and Ray of Revelation. Alexander West talks about the deck here.

April 10, 2015 4:53 p.m.

Grave Troll will do nothing for dredge vine. You need something a hell of a lot more game-ending than a regenerating x/x without any form of evasion if you are investing 5 mana.

Bloodgift Demon is 5 flying stapled to a phyrexian arena for the same cost. Thundermaw Hellkite blasts through lingering souls and provides a hasty flying 5/5.Thragtusk is two bodies and 5 life. Only the hellkite sees play, and that is fringe at best.

WotC said they banned the troll because dredge five was too powerful, but you already had the dredge 6 of Stinkweed Imp.

What dredge needs I don't know, but I do know it hasn't been printed yet.

tyforthevenom says... #26

Dredge needs Dread Return but it's banned

April 10, 2015 6:57 p.m.

tyforthevenom says... #27

Not only that but thragtusk is a sideboard card vs burn in a few green based decks right now including amulet bloom and gr tron

April 10, 2015 7:10 p.m.

tyforthevenom says... #28

GARGAGEDDON SHOULD BE ON THE LIST

April 10, 2015 8:35 p.m.

JexInfinite says... #29

Storm. Definitely storm.

April 10, 2015 8:43 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #30

Yeah I agree, I stopped playing the deck because it felt degenerate.

April 10, 2015 9:29 p.m.

tyforthevenom I had never heard of that deck until now, but now that I threw together a 35 dollar list, I'm going to buy it an play it while I slowly put together my junk flicker.

April 10, 2015 9:33 p.m.

RobertFischer says... #32

Living End gets under-sideboarded against these days, which is why it seems to be primed for a resurgence, especially now Deathrite Shaman is banned. But it dies to a whole slew of sideboard. Beyond that, it's slow compared to Affinity, Burn, etc.

I'd like to see more reanimator played to see how viable it is. It's dominant to the point of obnoxiousness in other formats, but it's pretty much absent to what I see.

April 10, 2015 9:55 p.m.

RobertFischer says... #33

I love 8Rack, and I think it's underrated and primed for some more exploration, since the core deck leaves a lot of room for tech and hybridization. I'm exploring a burn hybrid in 8Rakdos, and exploring a (so far utterly uncompetitive) creature-based approach in Rack and Slash.

April 10, 2015 10:09 p.m.

JexInfinite says... #34

RobertFischer Living End can win past a Rest in Peace, and people have played that a lot less since the Cruise ban.

I don't really want to see reanimator at the moment, especially with Amulet Bloom being a power player.

April 10, 2015 10:15 p.m.

8rakdos seems like it could be good. I've never speculated on anything before, but I'm trading for as many copies of kolgahan's command as I can get. IF and that is a big if there is a BRx deck that does well, command is gonna spike. It is an amazing card that only lacks a home.

It is instant speed discard + mainboardable artifact hate + spot removal + a raise dead.

April 10, 2015 11:09 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #36

Shameless self plug. 8rack wants to be 4 color really bad... On The Rag -Rakdos's 8RΔCK-

Monastery Swiftspear might be sick in the deck as The Rack Liliana of the Veil and Shrieking Affliction are all still non creature spells xD

April 10, 2015 11:35 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #37

Ad Nauseam is sick. I mean you get to use Phyrexian Unlife how dope is that.

U want a cool deck then find a powerful card and build around it. I think that's how Blue Moon came about. Awaken the Ancient Countryside Crusher Knight of the Reliquary.

I built my first deck around Sheoldred, Whispering One and my first standard deck was an excuse to play Vraska the Unseen...

Tribal zoo is actually super sweet. Getting to curve Noble Hierarch into Geist of Saint Traft into Siege Rhino into 2x Tribal Flames hit u for 10 and ur probably dead feels really good.
