wither deck help

Modern Deck Help forum

i am currently working on a wither based deck, relying on creatures with wither, and giving them boosted damage and first strike. the concept seems to work, but it's not able to consistently win. im looking for help finding cards that will help push the deck forward while still following the same theme. one thing to note is that the creature base is primarily elementals, so cards that specifically help elementals could be beneficial. wither strike.

update: i have changed the deck to be more agro, and ditched the first strike theme. there is a heavy elemental creature base allowing for some efficient combos, and Nest of Scarabs turns most creatures into a significant threat

Dabean27 "push the deck forward while still following the same theme" while i recognize that infect could help in some ways, it also changes the win condition, and would require building an entirely different deck. as the deck currently does not support infect, and would need to be completely scrapped to work for infect

Flamekin Harbinger seems like a natural fit in elemental decks, as does Nova Chaser, the former letting you tutor for wither elemental and the latter being a big threat. Brighthearth Banneret could also be interesting in the deck.

Additionally, maybe add some pay offs to -1/-1 counters like Nest of Scarabs.

The reason you're struggling is because your curve is jacked - you have way too many cards that cost 3 or more, which means your deck gets started at the time when most of the aggro or combo decks are looking to kill you. Furthermore, some of your cards are just... bad. I wouldn't even play the likes of Smoldering Butcher in Limited, to be honest. If you want to keep the wither theme, I suggest jamming 4 copies of Everlasting Torment, 4 copies of Soul-Scar Mage, and playing piles of burn spells and efficient creatures.

This is a really cool deck idea, and I think it has total potential. That being said you've really got to narrow down to either ago or mid-range. Necroskitter is totally cool here, since it's card advantage to the max. rothgar13 gave you some good advice, definitely include four Soul-Scar Mages, a Kolaghan's Command or two, like two Dreadbores, and a Cut / Ribbons. The whole first strike thing doesn't look good enough for the cards. I'd say take it out completely, and try to add in some haste enablers

Oloro_Magic thanks for the tips on the elementals, Flamekin Harbinger and Nova Chaser look like good additions to the deck. im not sure how the Brighthearth Banneret would fare, but ill do some testing with it and see how it does. also the Nest of Scarabs seems like a good addition to the deck, and ill look into other cards with similar advantages.

rothgar13 and SirSh4ggy. thanks for all the advice on how to imorove the deck, ill look into making it faster, and more agro than it currently is, and ill be sure to work with the Soul-Scar Mage and some burn. im not sure how i feel about removing the first strike, but ill do some testing with it and see how it plays out.

also rothgar13 SirSh4ggy what do you suggest i do with Ashling, the Extinguisher, and Stigma Lasher? they seem decent, but Ashling, the Extinguisher is a bit expensive if im going to make the deck more agro, and Stigma Lasher is only really directly effective against decks relying on gaining life, meaning it might serve better on the sideboeard

Stigma Lasher is a solid card. I'd keep it. Ashling cots too much, and I'd cut it.

Stigma Lasher is a keeper, and I even like Ashling, the Extinguisher but in order to run it you'd need two-three Brighthearth Bannerets. Those guys will help make it all faster if you're planning on keeping the elemental theme

SirSh4ggy i do intend on running the elemental theme still, and so far i have been able to consistently play a Flamekin Harbinger turn one, which lets me fetch a Nova Chaser, then turn two i play a Brighthearth Banneret, allowing for a turn 3 Nova Chaser. and when it gets wither it becomes a notable threat, especially if i have Nest of Scarabs out, which makes him far more dangerous to block. i may try adding Ashling, the Extinguisher back into the deck, but it still seems solid as is.
