Win con for Removal?

Modern Deck Help forum

Posted on Dec. 26, 2016, 9:02 p.m. by TUMTUM

So I want to build a modern deck. Specifically a "Mardu" deck that focuses on Just removing everything. Red for Burn, White for exile and wrath, Black for discard and actual "removal". This is of course budget. The one problem is I can't find a win con. Yes I could "burn" my opponent, but it is very fragile to do so. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................... help?

how about playing some creature like Grave Titan or the like?

Grave Titan or even Inferno Titan seem decent, maybe some reanimator sub-theme to apply late-game pressure?

You really want to be more proactive in modern. With Mardu, you get stuff like bob, discard, burn, lingering souls, path, etc. Burn to win and use creatures like Abbots or something. Then there's Nahiri into Emrakul. Monastery Mentor and Soulfire Grand Master are also options. Young money, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, etc.

Mardu's a "weak" color combination, but it's got decent options. I've seen tons of great brews for the wedge over the years. Still, don' just try to remove everything forever. Sooner or later, you're sequence of cards is going to falter or you just fall behind in tempo.

For a budget list, I would strongly recommend 4 Lingering Souls. This card is cheap, your opponents won't waste discard effects on it, and creating 4 1/1 fliers out of 1 card is extremely annoying to deal with in a format which focuses on single target removal.

For budget I second the 4 of Lingering Souls notion. you should also add in some manlands like Needle Spires to help get you there. Then maybe a couple big finishers like the titans mentioned above

a few things. @Simon_Williamson technically Rain of Gore won't work because you control Wall of Shards.

to TUMTUM: its generally a good idea to link to your deck (or to at least put a mock up of roughly what you think the deck will look like) so that people can get a better idea of what to work with.

secondly you seem to sound like you want to go a spell slinger route. lots of cheap instants and sorceries. Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, Inquisition of Kozilek, Terminate etc. if you you may want to check out the prowess route of Monastery Mentor or maybe some Young Pyromancer. the titans seem too heavily costed for what you sort of described wanting. also when you say budget, how budget do you mean? is a playset of Monastery Mentor breaking the bank? do you have any fetches? are you willing to purchase fetches? would you invest in the nahiri package (4 Nahiri, the Harbinger + 1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn) which is also a good win con? etc

WELP, FIRST LIST OUT ------>Whaddaya' Mean You have no creatures!!Love all the suggestions, but there IS a budget so if everyone can stick to that, that would be great!

we can't stick to the budget if we don't know it. some people consider $20 budget. some $50. other $300. theres quite a bit of variance. your deck currently costs ~$80. how much over that are you willing to go or is that your limit.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. It gets value out of your giant pile of removal spells. Alternatively, you can use your removal to buy time for Nahiri, the Harbinger and smack people over the head with an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Neither card is particularly budget-friendly, but quality win conditions rarely are. Monastery Mentor is somewhat more budget-friendly, but also markedly weaker.

90 to about 80 is my budget.

Total budget, or just for the win condition? Because I don't think you can get the list of the Mardu staples with just $80-90 for the whole deck. And you definitely can't do it while having a stable manabase. That deck would top out at kitchen-table competitiveness.

If it's $80-90 for the finishers, Kalitas backed up by something like a Gurmag Angler or a Goblin Dark-Dwellers is probably your best bet.

You could use the black gear hulk. He's hard to block and kills something when he hits the table

if you are serious about being a Truly hardcore control deck there is only one wincon you need, Elixir of Immortality.
