What prison deck should I play?

Modern Deck Help forum

SO I wanna go to a modern GP again cause vancouver was SO MUCH FUN! Ive found myself liking prison decks lately because once you lock your opponent out of the game, you can do whatever you want. I was wondering if there was a fast prison deck because of the current state of modern that is reasonably cheap.

Tron is the best prison deck in modern (best referring to the deck, not necessarily setting up the best prison). It keeps the board squeaky clean and just removes all of your opponents threats before killing them with some big dumb thing.

There's also Sun and Moon which is the RW prison deck that plays Blood Moon, Ghostly Prison, Nahiri, the Harbinger and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn to get the job done, it's a lot slower and has a lot more interaction.

Then there's the infamous Lantern control deck which locks your opponent out of drawing cards with Lantern of Insight and Codex Shredder, then stops them from attacking with Ensnaring Bridge and eventually mills them out for the win. This is the grindiest deck in modern.

If you're more on a budget, you can build a mono white prison style deck with like Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Safety, Magus of the Tabernacle, Suppression Field, and Damping Matrix. there's a ton of ways to build this sort of thing on a budget that can be found with a quick google / youtube search.

Lastly, if you want something a bit less prisony, just with prison elements, there's death and taxes that tries to land lock the opponent with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Leonin Arbiter, and Ghost Quarter then just beats down with white weenies.

Any of these are viable strategies in modern at the moment with Tron and Lantern being the highest tier'd options.

This is the mono white deck I play online, it looks to lock the opponent out with Kami of False Hope and Proclamation of Rebirth.

If that's not to your liking, check This link

Just look at what other people are playing to draw inspiration.

As DevoidMage says, there are several prison-type decks. I'm partial to the death&taxes approach - currently working on an UW version, that uses Spreading Seas for mana-denial, along with the usual lands Ghost Quarter and Tectonic Edge and white taxing cards Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Leonin Arbiter. Here's the deck: UW death and taxes.

This approach is good if you like being able to also fight early threats, and you can go on the offensive and pretend to be a beat-down deck against more controlling decks.

I've never had more fun playing a prison deck than when I played Lantern Control. The deck is amazing at locking an opponent out of a game and watching the fear in their eyes as they slowly realize that they have no hope is so much fun xD If you choose to run Lantern at a GP, make sure you practice a lot with the deck or you will go to time every round. The deck is very flexible and can pick off resources in a million different ways. Crucible of Worlds + Ghost Quarter for mana denial, Ghirapur AEther Grid + Ensnaring Bridge for creature denial, and a healthy amount of mill for your main win condition.

Is there a possible sorta budget version of Lantern? If there isnt is Mono white prison viable and almost as good?

Unfortunately you really need Ensnaring Bridge, Mox Opal, and Surgical Extraction to make the deck work properly, and those are all quite expensive pieces.

Mono white is likely the cheapest you can build a prison with.

Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Safety, Suppression Field, Story Circle, Nevermore, Oblivion Ring, Ivory Mask, Rule of Law...

Enchantress might be a decent option to look into for your first iteration as it's reasonably budget. It's not a total prison but it does use the disruptive elements so that it can set itself up. The MTGSalvation primer is also a good place to start.

I play an aggro deck with a prison SB. Works quite well.
