trying to move past casual

Modern Deck Help forum

I've been working on this deck for a while, and it plays pretty well in casual. I'm trying to take it to the next level.

Right now, the biggest problems are a lack of ways to avoid noncombat life loss and a lack of progression: it's too reactive, and doesn't really try to work toward any goal. The win conditions right now are the planeswalkers and Sphinx's Tutelage.

One interaction I particularly like in it is Black Sun's Zenith + Sudden Spoiling , which can take out virtually every creature and any number of creatures.

I'm trying to keep it as low-creature as possible, to avoid it becoming another pile of Bob the Snappy Goyf, but I'm willing to consider some. A few of the creatures I've been thinking about are Eternal Witness (recursion), Snapcaster Mage (recursion, but out of my current price range), Acidic Slime (removal) and Reaper of the Wilds (good body, difficult to get rid of, scry). I'm not even looking at Tarmogoyf right now; the deck doesn't have any way to protect it, and I'm not paying $100+ for eight square inches of Terminate bait.

I also know is the dominant Fog color, but adding it in would mean another huge investment for my mana base.

Please let me know of any any recommendations--thanks!

I apologize for the giant maybeboard; that's pretty much everything I was messing around with to move the deck along.

It sounds to me that Pixie Sticks might be a good place for you to start. It's a similar deck - locking your opponents out of the game, but rather than nullifying their board state, you fix it while it's still on top of their library.

The deck runs Lantern of Insight to view the top of your opponent's library, and one-drop mill artifacts such as Codex Shredder and Pyxis of Pandemonium to control your opponent's draws. Throw in some removal and Ensnaring Bridges and you have yourself a deck.

If this doesn't appeal to you (it's only for a select few who are content with incredibly long and grindy games), I do agree that your current deck needs an actual way to win. Unfortunately mill is probably the best way to go, and mill is a very difficult archetype to even do moderately well with.

While BSZ + Sudden Spoiling is a neat interaction, it's way too costly and ineffective for a modern deck. Simple removal and counter magic would probably fill those spots better.

What are your goals for the deck? Where do you want to play it?

ducttapedeckbox Pixie Sticks is what I've always been looking for and never knew it! Just did some basic research, and it's my new favorite build.

BSZ+SS is expensive, I'll give you that. This deck has been able to stall for long enough to hit the required mana, but having no competitive Constructed experience, I'll take your word for it. (Right now I play exclusively limited and casual.)

As for goals for the deck, I'm mostly looking for a signature deck that's reliable. I don't want to netdeck; I'm more than willing to use a tried and true core, but I don't want to copy somebody else's work.

My current Modern meta (I do watch other people play, so I can get a sense of what's going on) has been diversifying over the past couple weeks, but the most common decks I've seen are Jund midrange, Esper/Azorius hard control, and Naya zoo, with occasional showings of mono-B or BG Zombies.
