Thinking About Getting into Modern

Modern Deck Help forum

Hello all!I've taken a pretty long break from magic, last playing during the first Innistrad block. When I did play, I dabbled in standard, but mostly played legacy. Now that I'm thinking about getting back into magic, I've decided I want to play modern, seeing as there are very few legacy tournaments in my area and the fact that I've never really enjoyed standard as much. I'm leaning towards 2 different types of decks to start with. The first is a GW Auras, pretty straightforward, was just wondering if that still has a place in modern. The second deck is something that I'm not really sure is competitive at all, but something incorporating Myth Realized. This card looks like it could be a pretty good win-con. My questions with this type of deck are 1.) What colors would I run? UW is an obvious one, but I've also thought about RW with lots of burn. 2.) Could this be competitive? I haven't seen anything like this, so let me know if it can be done well. Let me know what you guys think. AThanks in advance!

Could go Mardu control w/ the big three removal spells (Fatal Push, Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt), planeswalkers, and discard. Myth Realized would be the only "creature", negating a lot of spells in the opponent's hand.

That is a possibility, are there any man lands that would be good for another win-con? Myth kinda falls flat on its face to Abrupt Decay.

Another option is UWB, plenty of removal and counter magic, also gives me Celestial Colonnade for a possible win-con.

Shambling Vent and Needle Spires would be the two man lands for the mardu deck

Firstly, wait till Modern Masters 2017 drops to pick up any expensive modern cards. Prices on some staples should drop in the weeks following, so buying now would not necessarily be a good idea.

Since no one else has commented on the GW Auras thing, there is a deck type called Bogles, based around the card Slippery Bogle and buffing it with Auras. It is semi-competitive, with a couple top 8 places in the last two months.

Here is a decklist I found by searching tappedout decks for Modern and Slippery Bogle,

Ach! Hans, run! It's a Bogle!

First of all, thanks to Denial048 for the shoutout. GW Auras (often referred to as Bogles) is consistently a Tier 3 deck. In the early days of modern, it was a tier 1-2 deck, and I believe Reid Duke (?) piloted it to the finals of a pro tour (or some other large event). Since then, it has fallen off quite a bit because of its weakness to Jund. But, the deck is very strong, is skill intensive, and is quite cheap without Horizon Canopy. And now that Kor Spiritdancer and Path to Exile have dropped quite low, I would suggest for sure picking the deck up. Bogles is a fun deck for sure.

Regarding Myth Realized, this card was hyped a lot when it was spoiled, but has been found by many to simply not do enough efficiently as a win-con in a control shell. Also be aware that it dies to Fatal Push.

rsweeney56,
Welcome to Modern!

I'll often check out MTGTop8 on questions like this. Some info from there:

Bogles (aka Aura Hexproof) is big enough to have its own category (rather than just being part of 'other'), so there's still at least a small place for it. It appears this deck is the best performer recently ... it went 5-0 on MTGO Competitive League the other day.

There have only been two remotely competitive decks using Myth Realized since the card was printed: A BW Control deck and a Death's Shadow deck from before the Probe ban.

Hope this helps, and sorry if it was just spam!

Bovine073,
Yeah, Reid Duke took Bogles to #2 at the World Championship in 2013.

rsweeney56,
It's a little dated of course, but here's Reid's article on the deck. There are a bunch of coverage videos out there too.

Myth Realized runs into the problem of being vulnerable to all commonly played removal in modern Abrupt Decay, Fatal Push, Terminate, Path to Exile, with just one notable exception in Lightning Bolt, although it does dodge a lot of what is played at sorcery speed. Sorcery speed sweepers has never really been a big deal in modern, which it would dodge perfectly.

It does not work particularly well in RW burn, as it competes with f.ex. Monastery Swiftspear, and the competition is on damage-over-short-time, rather than piles-o'-damage.

Here is a race between the two burn decks (a and b):

aT1: land, monastery swiftspear, damage: 1

bT1: land, Myth Realized. damage: 0

aT2: land, Lightning Bolt, Lava Spike damage T1+T2: 4

bT2: land, Lightning Bolt, activate myth for damage 1? nah.... max damage by T2: 1

aT3: Goblin Guide, Boros Charm, damage T1+T2+T3: 7

bT3: You really can't catch up with myth realized. Then you'd have to go for a longer game... Play free spells is ok, but not really great as you run out of anything decent to cast in no time.

However, there is Thing in the Ice  Flip which does something a bit similar, and that is seeing play...

I think if you are looking to be budget friendly, boggles is your deck.

The most expensive part about most moder deck is the mana base. You don't have to build an expensive mana base, but it increase the consistency of the deck.

Other budget options are things like stompy, which is my favorite budget deck in Modern, and even living end is rather inexpensive in comparison to most decks.

First off, thanks for thee comments everyone! You've all been really helpful in making my decision a little bit easier.

I'm getting the vibe that IF I were to run myth it would have to be in a heavy counter magic shell to protect it from creature removal (still falling to Abrupt Decay obviously). Or along the same lines that xyr0s mentioned, possibly using Thing in the Ice  Flip.

But, I think I am leaning towards Bogles. I've looked at a lot of deck lists and I actually have most of the cards excluding some of the land base.

I think I'll end up toying around with both, but I'll be a bit more serious with Bogles.

Thanks again guys!
