Modern Deck Help forum

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read my thread.

Ive rebuilt my Infinite Landfall deck to splash some red and have moved it from a midrange deck to a full on Combo deck. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/temur-landfall-2/

This is the initial combo build Ive done. Ive included a lot of ways to dig for my combo, but the problem I feel the deck has is that theres no room for counter spells or ways to protect my creatures. Specifically the Sakura-Tribe Scout which is critical to the combo. After staring at this thing for so long Im not really sure what can come out to make room for something, and would I really be able to put enough in the deck to make including it worth while anyways?

The one aspect I am happy with though is I feel like theres plenty of ways to win the game with whats included. Hedron Crab can mill out an opponents library, Tunneling Geopede can simply kill them, Retreat to Kazandu can gain me enough life to live out the game until another strategy wins me the match, and Grove Rambler can become so huge that I can swing with him and kill the opponent just on trample damage.

Im good at Aggro and Midrange decks. Combo and control decks arent really my forte. This is new territory for me. So I could definitely use some help from players who like combo style decks and have more experience with them than I do. Thanks for your feedback.

So instead of having a thousand outlets to win the game once you get the combo going, I'd advise just getting more combo pieces in there. Walking Atlas gives you more dudes that you can combo with, at least. Your combo is excruciatingly fragile and you have no ways to protect it. You don't need Hedron Crab or the bad landfall dudes as much as you need the combo. The geopede is fine because it's damage that they can't interact with, but between that and the infinite life from the other retreat, that's enough win conditions. That frees up at least 5 slots for more things to protect the combo. Even going so deep as to use Mizzium Skin or something of the sort as protection would help immensely.

Sorry to double post, but you could even just use crabs and the retreat, make the deck just UG and have more slots to protect the combo on top of having a better more stable mana base.

Apostle's Blessing is the go-to protection spell in modern. Even better that you can cast it in non-white decks, unlike most protection like Gods Willing and such. However, Remand, Pact of Negation, and sideboard Dispel are also options with more use than just protecting your dude, but they won't stop everything from killing your dude.

Does red even give anything better over white?

In white, you would get Steppe Lynx and Knight of the Reliquary. Knight of the Reliquary goes "infinite" with Retreat to Coralhelm.

Steppe Lynx combines with Vinelasher Kudzu, Scythe Leopard, Undergrowth Champion, and Snapping Gnarlid to get even more crazy.

Red only gives Plated Geopede, which (in my opinion) seems weaker than Knight of the Reliquary + Steppe Lynx. It also gives Lightning Bolt, but Path to Exile seems stronger in your type of deck.

@sylvannos the problem with all that is sure it gets big, but none of it tramples, so it could get chump blocked and you don't accomplish anything. Red gives me tunneling Geopede and Grove Rambler who gets huge enough that I can trample damage through. And Knight of the Reliquary doesn't go infinite because you don't have an infinite amount of lands in your deck.

@DevoidMage It originally was UG. I spashed red because it does the direct damage like you said. I included the multiple ways to wincon cause if I have one there's no guarantee I get to it. So I feel I need at least two, but that's still only 8 cards out of a 60 card deck. Maybe That doesn't really matter in a combo deck with a ton of cantrips to hit everything on the way.

So what should I take out specifically, and what do you suggest I put in?
