Stax in modern

Modern Deck Help forum

My immediate reaction to looking at what people play in a format is usually "how can I prevent that from happening". I've played vintage and legacy like 10 years ago and currently I play only cEDH but when playing online I sometimes jam a modern match inbetween. What I know about the format has led me to build a stax deck that shuts down the basic mechanics most people want to use.

I've had some success with it, mostly because Root Maze and Suppression Field along with the other stuff kill decks with many fetchlands completely. Especially UW Control, various delver variants and storm seem to have a really hard time.

I lack the knowledge about what bad matchups could be though and from my experience up to now I'd say some card choices and sideboard could be improved against faster aggro decks. Maybe someone wants to check out the list...splashing R, B or U has also been considered

This is a well established deck in modern known as Hatebears. Although most lists have migrated past green into adding colorless for the value town Eldrazi cards like Thought-Knot Seer

I've had a look at hatebears and death and taxes lists...I wanted to go deeper into the mechanics that keep people from playing anything right from the start. It worked well so far to the point of many games (especially against UW or grixis delver) being basically solitaire, just straight burn crap and elves and stuff like that makes some trouble.

Have you looked at Lantern Control? It's the best "prison" deck of the format.

Otherwise some cards I suggest are Ensnaring Bridge, Ghostly Prison, and As Foretold.

Yeah I know lantern control, I've even transferred the idea to cEDH with some guys but controling the draws is not where I want to go with this. Bridge won't be cool because it prevents myself from attacking (even though I could technically attack with hierarch and birds with exalted triggers from Archangel - I've had one game so far in which I won that way AGAINST lantern) but do you think ghostly prison is a reasonable sideboard card against aggro decks that don't get wrecked automatically with the etb tapped and additional costs for fetchlands and everything?

What do you think about using chalice of the void? My 1 drops aren't that important after the first turns but many decks probably have their means for escaping the stax and beaters in the cmc 1 slot...it's too bad that modern doesn't have favourites like Tangle Wire and Winter Orb available :/
