Hello Everyone!

So I finally decided what I was going to build for Modern, and that's Stax!

It's Time to Say No

This deck aims to spit out the Curse of Exhaustion + Knowledge Pool /Rule of Law combo as soon as possible, backed up by removal and Chalice of the Void. For those not familiar, the combo keeps the enchanted player from casting any spells. The first spell goes "into the pool", and then that player can choose to cast another spell from the pool of exiled cards, but they can't because they've already cast their one spell for the turn.

I want to cut cards from here to make the deck budget, as in less than $200 would be perfect. I'm thinking about replacing Gaddock Teeg with Rule of Law to make the combo more consistent, and replacing Maelstrom Pulse with Declaration in Stone. I want to fix the manabase so it's not ridiculously expensive. I decided that Chalice of the Void is mandatory and I need to have 4 of them.

Modern Players, what am I missing from here? What sideboard options should I consider? What decks should I worry about most?

Thanks for all your help!

You don't actually have any win conditions in the deck. what's the plan once a lock is established? beat down with mana elves? Some sort of planeswalker or thing with an activated ability seems ideal here if you're going to be adding in rule of law. any garruk, gideon, or nissa should work wonders here.

Yeah this plan has been explored. Its a funny combo but its easy to figure out. Deck template on the way of saff's list if I can remember it correctly.

I think millstone might be a decent enough finish since it can stay a couple of turns, acts as a wincon, and eats removal if removed.

Without any manlands in the deck you don't actually have a realistic way of winning with this deck. Just a lock and nothing else. Try sticking some number of Stirring Wildwood, Shambling Vent and/or Treetop Village in to give yourself a win-con.

i think they use their opponents cards exiled with knowledge pool

My problem with the mentality of using the opponent's cards exiled (Aikido style) is that there is the possibility of your opponent exiling no value (3 lands or 2 lands 1 useless) so the game is just wait for deckout.

Helix Pinnacle is a good win con.
