Soul Sisters land count

Modern Deck Help forum

I am working on a Soul Sisters variation that uses Chalice of Life as opposed to Serra Ascendant. I thought I could use the money saved to bolster other parts of the deck. Here is the deck as it stands:

Soul Sisters Chalice variant

  • 16 Plains
  • 4 Ghost Quarter
  • 4 Ajani's Pridemate
  • 4 Soul's Attendant
  • 4 Martyr of Sands
  • 4 Soul Warden
  • 4 Path to Exile
  • 4 Oblivion Ring
  • 4 Secure the Wastes
  • 4 Chalice of Life
  • 4 Honor of the Pure
  • 4 Spectral Procession

Here's the question. With the majority of the cards I need for this deck available for less than ten dollars combined, I'm looking to add a planeswalker, either Elspeth Knight-Errant or Gideon, ally of Zendikar. I'm only adding two, but here's the question:

How many lands does this deck need to run? Is 18 too few?

I always ran 20 or 21 lands in my soul sisters. The only time I ran 18 I had issues. I ran Elspeth in the sideboard and she seemed amazing.

I also had Chalice in sideboard and rarely used it so I cannot provide insight on it.

I ran Serra Ascendant in my verion and it was key to winning many times. Even with removal it is hard to stop a 6/6 Flying lifelink on turn 2.

That being said, if planeswalker is your choice, I'd said Elspeth, Knight Errant is perfect for Sisters.

Another non budget option is Flagstones of Trokair. While not needed, it is definitely helpful at times.

Im going to repeat King a bit here

20 lands is a good start (id probably go 3 ghost quarters 17 plains)
I love me a well timed Serra Ascendant but I havent really used Chalice of Life  Flip so I cant give any good insight there
Elspeth KE is where you want to go planeswalker wise: she makes creatures, pumps them, and can make them indestructible

Another decent card I still want to test with is Lone Rider  Flip

Looking it over, It comes to this: A mana base of 20 supports my mana curve, 20 1 CMC, 12 2 CMC, and 8 3 CMC. Adding Elspeth Laves a mana base of 18 supporting a curve of 20 1 CMC, 12 2 CMC, 3 CMC, and 2 4CMC.

This appears risky, but do the endgame benefits outweigh the midgame risks?
