See the Unwritten - Modern Viable?

Modern Deck Help forum

Hello fellow Magicplayers.

I thought about the card See the Unwritten and its modern-viability. I currently play it in standard, were it plays pretty smoothly. Now I wanted to ask y'all: what does a modern see the unwritten deck need? I built it g/w for Congregation at Dawn to get the Creatures I need. Please have a look and throw in some suggestions: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/see-the-unwritten-in-modern-no-way/

Oh yeah, I also have one card too much in the mainboard and I have no sb so far. It's propably gonna be pretty standard - Leylines and stuff.

6 mana is too much for modern. You can't reasonably cast it.

maybe in GR tron? but things like a Gifts Ungiven / Unburial Rites seem more consistent in UW tron.

sorcery speed, can be countered, needing the ferocious trigger, high casting cost, and the possibility of whiffing are all issues that make it standard maybe viable but less likely to do so in modern

Jex, Summoning Trap disagrees with that. And the whole Tron deck. And Amulet bloom. 6 mana is NOT too much.

That said, Summoning Trap is just better. The alternate cost of 0 is pretty appealing.

I see your points there. Thank you.

The thing that worries me the most is the ferocious trigger. Things get pathed pretty easily and I'm not guaranteed to even get the mana together. I see the argument that bloom titan has a 6 mana line aswell, but they have bouncelands and they can kill on turn one and i dont have that. :D

Gr tron has cheaper ways to dig for what they want on top of the fact that they don't only play creatures as win conditions. Gr tron has like 6 creatures in the entire main... so good luck hitting off see the unwritten...

Boza See the Unwritten is a fair card, when the other decks are trying to cheat stuff. There's no point trying to force fair cards when you could just effectively cheat better cards. It doesn't already see play, when it definitely could already have seen play. It's just not up to modern standard.

JexInfinite, I do not see how putting emrakul or progenitus on the field for 6 mana is fair. Summoning Trap eldrazi (used to be) is still a viable deck, albeit (quite) a bit lower in the tiers.

The problem is that OP is trying to approach this fairly, but StU rewards unfair plays. Casting this with ramp on turn 3 and putting a fatty down is a legitemate play.

A monogreen ramp deck would be the best place for this. 4 Summoning Trap, 4 See the Unwritten, 4 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, 3 Progenitus, 22 ramp cards and 23 lands. Boom, deck done.

Boza 7 targets for StU is a bit less i would say. Chances are I'm never gonna hit anything. and that would be worst case; wasting 6 mana, milling 8 cards.

But I get the basic idea. Maybe I'll rebuild it a bit.

Yeah, just ignore the ferocious part on the card. Getting one resilient fatty should be enough.

The only reasonable way I can see this being played is as Primeval Titans 5-8 in Amulet Bloom. It allows you to play more bomby creatures, but I'm not sure it's worth taking other stuff out for. Maybe you could remove the pact kill to do it, but that doesn't seem like a great idea, considering the pact kill is always a gotcha.

It might work great game 1 but game 2-3 will be tough. You'll probably flood out a lot with hands full of mana and the dorks. How many times will summoning trap be cast for 0?

In the end, I don't think paying 6 mana at sorcery speed as early as turn 3 with no guarantee is as unfair as putting grisselbrand on your field turn 2 then continuing to win the game on said turn
