Modern Deck Help forum

Thanks to APPLE01DOJ I've got a zombie deck in the list of deck considerations. Now I'm looking for a Mono- Black deck without zombies. Like I said, I don't know enough about what good decks look like so I need a little more help. Thanks.

Modern mono-black:

Geralf's Messenger, Vampire Nighthawk, Gatekeeper of Malakir, Phyrexian Obliterator, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, removal spells, Thoughtseize. That's basically the deck. Link

Or you could play 8 Rack

Or Death cloud

Budget options for all of these archetypes can be found with a quick google search.

Mono Brogues is always a good under-the-radar option.

It doesn't get much more budget than that, and it performs very well in my experience.
Obviously, if your meta has a bunch of non-creature decks, this may not be great. :)

I have a monoblack deck that you could build pretty easily under $250. The deck is pretty competitive and fun to play, however, it has a couple weaknesses that I think should be addressed, the largest of which, this deck relies on the graveyard. Secondly, the deck has slight mana ramp using cards like Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Crypt of Agadeem. Another important thing to mention is this, if you have Thoughtseize lying around or you have enough money to purchase a playset, they would greatly increase the flexibility of this deck in the main-board.

Here's the deck; Devotion to Zombie Tribal

If you are going to use the decklist, make sure to tell me how it went and the changes you made to help me better my deckbuilding. Thanks, have fun out there.

So many ways to play mono black, I don't even know where to begin. I'll be happy to help you build a deck but I have to tell you first there are several key factors that hold mono black back.

First, it's most competitive cards are all expensive, Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant, Damnation Thoughtseize, Death's Shadow, Bloodghast, Bitterblossom, Phyrexian Obliterator. Additionally, cards like Bloodghast and Fatal Push don't reach their full potential without fetches.

Second, mono black has no way to deal with enchantments or non-creature artifacts.

Third, black stand alone creatures are typically over-costed with drawbacks compared to other colors. Tarmogoyf is a 4/5-5/6 for where Nyxathid is a 5/5-6/6 for . Fleecemane Lion is a 3/3 with an upside compared to black's Sangrophage with a significant downside.

Fourth, mono black uses it's life to gain advantage. This means bad Burn match ups and far more risky plays. Thoughtseize, Dismember, Dark Confidant all assure that you'll typically close games out in single digits.

Finally, there is very little in terms of Ramp in mono black. Crypt Ghast and the above mentioned lands Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Crypt of Agadeem are just about it.

All that out of the way. You can build 8Rack, Midrange, Devotion, Aggro, Smallpox. Control can be built on a budget but it'll never be as good without Liliana of the Veil. If you pick an archetype I'll help you flesh it out.

APPLE01DOJ It seems like you only play Black. Or you're just very knowledgeable about the game. Also, from what you said, it seems like Black should be paired with something. I'd like Mono but I'm not apposed to Black/Blue or Black/Green if it helps.

Yea, I've been playing Golgari and Mono Black my entire MTG career.

Blue and black don't typically pair very well because they don't compliment each other's weaknesses. However a few decks do exist, Faeries, Mill, Horror Tribal (Thing in the Ice  Flip,) and Zombies. Of those Faeries is typically regarded as the best.

Green and black however go perfectly hand in hand. Green offers everything mono black lacks, better creatures, artifact, and enchantment removal that compliment black's control aspects.

Have you considered playing Mono Green Infect? It can be built for very cheap and is capable of turn 2 wins.

Simply swap out the Noble Hierarchs for Plague Myrs or Llanowar Augurs and you'll be good to go.

APPLE01DOJ I'm trying to stay away from Mono-Green because that's my Standard Deck. But Golgari is fine though. I'm a big fan of the lore of MTG. How the players are Planeswalkers and all that. And the stories in general. That's just the way I am. I like to put myself in games of all kinds which is admittedly a bit childish but I don't care. But anyway, I'm good with Golgari. If I were in the MTG world, I'd definitely be Black,Dimir or Golgari. Golgari works for me though, if you don't mind helping.

APPLE01DOJ I'd like something without zombies first if possible.

Well basically, you can take this shell and add whatever creatures you want to it and it'll work. I would highly advise to keeping creatures in the 2 mana range with only a few cmc 3 or above. No matter how appealing Thragtusk looks it's typically better to stick to Kitchen Finks.

4x Blooming Marsh 1x Forest 4x Ghost Quarter 2x Hissing Quagmire 4x Overgrown Tomb 4x Swamp 4x Woodland Cemetery

(Adding Verdant Catacombs and Polluted Delta to the deck over time will upgrade the mana base.)

4x Abrupt Decay 2x Bile Blight*
4x Fatal Push 1x-2x Maelstrom Pulse

(*Optional other removal includes Dismember, Vendetta, Victim of Night and Go for the Throat)

Other upgrades would include Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Collective Brutality, and Liliana of the Veil.

APPLE01DOJ Really? Any creatures. Any suggestions on mana curve? I've never built a deck from scratch and I honestly don't know where to start.

Well if budget wasn't an issue, you would fill it in like this. Rock 2017 (this is my IRL deck btw)

Scavenging Ooze is really good and cheap right now.

Hooting Mandrills isn't too bad considering you can Delve it into play

Kitchen Finks is solid and almost always a 2-1.

Glissa, the Traitor could be a decent 1 of. She can kill pretty much anything.

Asylum Visitor is a decent Dark Confidant substitute.

Oona's Prowler has a decent body and Nantuko Shade is flexible.

Ideally you're curve would be T1 Thoughtseize/Fatal Push, T2 Dark Confidant/Abrupt Decay, T3 Liliana of the Veil. So just keep your creatures converted mana cost as low to the ground as possible. 1 Thrun, the Last Troll or Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or other 4 cmc creature is okay in the deck, max 2.

APPLE01DOJ Would a tribal deck work or should I focus on a mechanic? Since it's for FNM, I'd like it to be as competitive as possible.

APPLE01DOJ says... #16

Honestly when you play tribal and mechanics you're forced to play bad cards just because they fit with the theme. I would strongly recommend you just play general good stuff instead.

March 24, 2017 10:58 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ On the Black/Green Zombie deck you linked for me, you said it could be built a little cheaper. What would you takeout?

APPLE01DOJ says... #18

Here is the deck Zombie Deck.

I didn't say it could be built for less, I said it could be built for around 200$.

How to make it cheaper you could cut Choke and Thrun, the Last Troll from the sideboard, Maelstrom Pulse from the main board, and Llanowar Wastes/Temple of Malady could replace some of the mana base. I personally don't recommend any of these changes.

You should make a list and then deck cycle it on this site. It's easy to do. Just go to deck builder. It makes it easiest for people on this site to help you out and they may offer suggestions I would never think of.
