Modern Deck Help forum

Hey guys,

As usual, I'm curious to see what the T/O Modern community thinks of this new set coming up and what cards could make waves in our beloved format.

I'm a bit shocked by Assassin's Trophy I must say. I love the card, don't get me wrong. But to me, the ramp aspect doesn't make up for the instant speed 'destroy target permanent' part. It's just a cheaper Vindicate at this point, which seems nuts!

So far, that's the only card that stands out for me. Did you guys see something I didn't? :) What are your thoughts on Assassin's Trophy?

This is the best removal spell ever printed, period. Wizards removed masterpieces from sets but a foil Assassin's Trophy will be as expensive as any masterpiece and just as rare.

I like the shocklands, but we have too few cards spoiled at this point. Actually, i like a card they just spoiled:

Nice one, but too weak! I love Boros spells, though I'd prefer to have something a bit more pushed like :

'Deals 3 damage to each creature. If a creature would die, exile it instead.

Whenever a creature is put into exile from the battlefield this turn, you gain 2 life.'

That kind of stuff.

Forgot to mention card:bounty agent too. Pretty nice card imo.

Love the new GB Kill spell. Man I'm so excited for this set as a whole, I may even play standard. Waiting on more spoilers before I pick favorites but yea I'm sure there will be tons of modern playables. RTR brought so many.

Assassin's Trophy and, possibly, Molderhulk are gonna make Jund players very happy. Vraska, Golgari Queen looks broken, but I need to see a deck run it before I'd call it's grade-A broken.

I really want some of the undergrowth cards to see a decent bit of play, either in dredge or some other graveyard matters deck, because it looks so fun just from what's been spoiled so far. I want to brew a creature heavy/only deck just to see if I can make it work.

I like the new Vraska, I could picture her in a Control deck with Bitterblossom or zombies and Bloodghast sadly I think Vraska the Unseen is still better.

March of the Multitudes seems pretty crazy to me.

B/W Tokens or Soul Sisters would easily benefit from splashing green for this card.

Searching only for a black card, instead of any card, makes this a horrible tutor outside of EDH.

Boza, I think it's good for two reasons :

  1. It's ANY CARD. AT INSTANT SPEED.

  2. It doesn't require to be only black. That means you can go get a Liliana of the Veil or something more fancy like Dreadbore or Sultai Charm at the end of your opponent's turn. It finds you answers and essentially turns your deck into a toolbox.

You could also go 5c aggro and have this to find the right creature at the right mana cost at the right time :D the possibilities are endless, my friend!

But the card must be at least partially black, you cannot find a Force of Will at instant speed and cast it. It is not a bad card and will see play in standard, but not anywhere else, the requirement is extremely strict and works against itself in older formats - if you are a deck that can easily stuff the yard with dudes, there is probably no card you need in your hand. If you cannot easily fill the yard, this card does nothing.

Unless an undergrowth centric deck appears, I do not think this has legs in modern.

Not to sound like an asshole, but it's the Modern forum so FoW isn't relevant :)

I don't think it needs a specific build to work well. You mostly play 1, 2 and 3 cmc spells most of the time, so just having 1, 2 or 3 creatures in the yard will do. Anyways, since you always need to test a card to know it's value, I think some brewing is required!

Dredge or a Ghoultree deck could use it. Although what they would tutor up is beyond me.

Could be useful in Jund for finding K-Command or Assassin's Trophy.

Assigning combat damage equal to toughness is inherently in GW. P/T switching is in UR. They are different things.
