New-ish player needing help with a $40-$60 zombie token/zombie swarm deck.

Modern Deck Help forum

I recently saw the card Army of the Damned. I thought it'd be cool to have a board full of zombies. I know it's not the greatest card and I don't have to use it. I'd like it to be good enough to win at least sometimes. This Modern deck is for Fridays tournaments. Thanks for the help.

Try and build something, Knight_of_Aces!

The community here is more than happy to critique your idea, and help make it more competitive. Half the fun is coming up with an idea and trying to make it work.

Beyond that there's tons of Zombie tribal decks on here already. You could look through what's already been posted and tweak it to your needs.

Heyo! As a player who built a Zombie token deck in my early days of the game, I'd like to offer some advice.

I did use Army of the Damned. It takes a LOT to get to, so I used mana ramp like Crypt Ghast and Dark Ritual. Problem is, Dark Ritual isn't Modern legal, so when I took them out for an FNM, the deck slowed down a ton. One thing I would suggest is lots of removal and disruption so you don't get beat down while you're working on the combo.

As far as other cards, Grave Titan and Eldrazi Monument are crazy fun.

Good luck!

Zombies is pretty fun, but often hard to play competitively. Some good zombie cards I would suggest are:

Cryptbreaker, Diregraf Captain, Diregraf Colossus, Gravecrawler, Prized Amalgam, Relentless Dead, and Unbreathing Horde. If you don't play with Gravecrawler and/or Relentless Dead, you may not need Prized Amalgam.

Other good support cards include Ghoulcaller's Chant, Zombie Apocalypse, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Graf Harvest, and Gisa and Geralf, as well as some of the aforementioned cards.

I know not all the cards are the cheapest, but many of them will be more reliable at filling the board with zombies than Army of the Damned will be (although it is such a fun card). Diregraf Colossus and Endless Ranks of the Dead are great at doing this.

I have a U/B zombie deck I made a while ago, if you want to look at it. If you play mono-black zombies, consider adding Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

CommanderNeyo Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I'm also open to other decks. It's just I love zombies in general. TV series, movies. Anything. And in this game, they're really cool. Aggro, control. I'm open.

It's not quite in your budget (mostly due to lands that aren't totally required like the verdants) but you might want to check out the one I have been running online right now if nothing else it can be a spring board towards whatever you build. Has had mild success. beats tier 3 decently enough and actually has been quite competitive versus decks like jund and abzan at times. The unfair matchups end badly though like Tron and scapeshift. Here's the deck Shadow of Zombies

Also of those support cards mentioned above Graf Harvest probably the most underrated Zombie based card ever. Definitely the MVP in my list. It gives zombie is tribal a Modern fish feel for the evasion. I've won a lot of games just because I flood out my board and then give them all menace. Also that token generator is amazing as well when you have zombies that have no real chance of coming back in there and need a body in a pinch.
