Need Help with Black WinCon and Lands

Modern Deck Help forum

So my

deck is running VERY well but I know it's nowhere near it's potential. The only suggestion I won't take is Fatal Push. I personally don't like the card. I need a game ending bomb of some sort and probably a replacement for Blighted Fen.

Phyrexian Obliterator is really good if you are mono black, it also curves out well in your list. They are a bit pricey if you want to stay budget though, so Death Cloud is a good budget option as a finisher.

I'm only hitting like 4-5 mana a game though. Death Cloud would just get 2 of each maybe.

So your deck is very casual. I can see why Fatal Push wouldn't be utilized by your list. That being said, your deck won't go very far in the competitive scene.

So these will obviously be better for different decks but best wincons in black are Abyssal Persecutor, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Death's Shadow, Nyxathid, Gurmag Angler/Tasigur, the Golden Fang, Phyrexian Crusader, The Rack, and Phyrexian Obliterator.

Not wincons by definition but cards that will win you the game are Dark Confidant and Liliana of the Veil.

How can I make it more competitive? I'm about to switch Ob Nixilis Reignited for Liliana of the Veil and my Blighted Fen for Mortuary Mire

Well you first have to understand that there is no mono black midrange deck in modern. The reasons for this are that mono black has no cards capable to interact with enchantments or noncreature artifacts and mono black's creatures are generally outclassed when comparing cmc to on board fire power.

Black is typically paired with green because green tends to balance up black's shortcomings. (Tarmogoyf, Scavenging Ooze, Abrupt Decay, Maelstrom Pulse and improved sideboard options like Creeping Corrosion and Back to Nature)

Since you want to improve your deck you first have to decide how your deck is going to win. Once you do that we can help you craft it to be viable.

One of the best reasons to run black is the discard. Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Collective Brutality allow you to address threats before they come into play.

Is there any infinite combo other than Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood in mono black then?

APPLE01DOJ says... #9

None that I'm aware of.

There is Blood Tribute, in conjunction with Sanguine Bond... but the combo is still bulky and janky and I would not use it.

That takes even more mana! Haha

Never said was good, lol. To the contrary I said it was bulky. Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood really isn't much better. It's usually just more efficient to play Phyrexian Obliterator, swing with it a few times, and then play a Gray Merchant of Asphodel or a Profane Command.

I'm thinking about making my creatures have unblockable abilities such as intimidate, fear, skulk, or it just being unable to be blocked. That, or make them have hexproof/indestructible but I don't think I can with mono black.

February 12, 2017 1:22 p.m.

Yeah, black does not do hexproof of indestructibility well. But it is very recursive and can repeatedly bring stuff back to play from the graveyard (see Lord of the Undead, Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, Relentless Dead). Intimidate and fear and skulk are also not good keywords to build around. Think of them as tertiary keywords -- ones that are nice to have, but can't really be built around. Again, they are nice to have -- but if you are looking to build around them, you limit your card pool and wind up with a few good cards, and a few that are bad that you are just using because of the keyword. Take Relentless Dead for example. It is not good because it has menace. It is good because a 2/2 for 2 is reasonably costed, but then not only can it recur itself, but also another zombie. The menace is just gravy. Profane Command is not good because it grants fear. It is good because it is a mana sink for mono black devotion decks that goes straight to your opponent's face that also happens to be able to give your creatures fear.

That actually helped me understand a lot. By the way, the deck has gone under a MASSIVE change. All creatures are vampires. Looking better?

If you wanted to combine a kill spell and creature, Gatekeeper of Malakir is a pretty good option. Also Gray Merchant of Asphodel is really good for mono black decks as a curve out for an end game.

See, I want to build vampires with life drain (as it is now) or zombies with the goal being build an army using "from graveyard to hand/battlefield" things and have Gray Merchant of Asphodel as a game ender.

You have a good selection of vampires so far, adding in Gatekeeper of Malakir would give you a little bit of board control off of your 3 drop. Maybe could tweak some numbers for your creatures and potentially dropping any number of Go for the Throat and Ultimate Price for them as they are very specific removal, whereas the gatekeeper kills most anything early and leaves a body behind. Gary is a really good finisher for this deck as you have a lot of black mana requirements in your deck, you could easily drain for 7 by turn 5.
