If you like the colours, may I suggest a Scapeshift deck? Tier 1.5, but it's still pretty interesting, and relatively safe from sideboard hate

Hey there! Sooooo, I want you to go to this Grand Prix and have a good time. Which means, you either need to go knee deep with a plan (your deck has a few of them) OR you could try out something tried and true. I want to save you from what will ultimately happen to you, which is that you will end up facing SO MANY opponents that have come for blood. Their decks are tried and true and many of them win on turn four or five (If they aren't going knee deep as well with some shenanigans).

SO! Here's a link to MtgGoldFish's metagame breakdown (it's an online gauge of where each format is based on past tournaments both online and major events out here in the real world). http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern#online Go and check it out, there are some decks that are competitive, fun, and under a hundred dollars. Albeit, you need to know the deck through and through so I would try to play as many games with it as possible.

Hope this helped!

ArcherAlex thanks dude yeah this helped out quite a bit I'll take a look at the link right now as far as my deck goes I'm probably going to test it and tear it down at least a hundred times before I'm satisfied with it, as far as eldrazi go I have plenty to build a functional simic devoid deck but I want to try my hand with something non cookie cutter ya know? I want to build a tried and true simic deck that can man handle eldrazi so I can be proud of what I accomplish while I'm there.

  1. I absolutely love the idea of walking into a Modern tournament with a $10 deck that is almost entirely Standard. That is awesome!

  2. Uh, I am just worried that you are not going to have any fun. I mean, I have this gut feeling that you just are not going to have any fun at all. It is one thing to lose 0-2 when you put up a good fight and had something remotely resembling a chance of winning, but just getting stomped in every game is something I do not find to be fun, not at all, which is what I am afraid will happen if you play this deck.

  3. In addition to the suggestion above to go check out budget decks, I have two Modern budget decks here, which should be at least fun and would give you some reasonable chance of possibly even winning a match or two:

    a. CONSTRUCTICON MODERN budget build
    b. Cheap Modern Burn

Of these two, the burn deck is the best investment because many of the cards are actually used in expensive Burn decks, but I really enjoy playing my colorless decks, and they take people by surprise. People just generally do not know how to deal with them, which generally matters.

I am sorry that competitive Modern has become stupidly expensive, and I admire anyone with the resolve to take a dirt-cheap deck to a tournament.

Just so you know, I have taken second place at a competitive G.P.T. with a $25 deck and first place at another with what at the time was a $35 deck, but those were Standard, not Modern.

Your mana curve is bottlenecked at 3. It is too high.

Mana Leak in place of Cancel.
Unsummon or Vapor Snag in place of Sweep Away.
Giant Growth in place of Titanic Growth.
Narcolepsy in place of Claustrophobia.

That would make it better, but I still do not see it being much fun for you, but I assume that you just have to play with the cards you have. Good luck! Enjoy!

You could be a simic monkey and play hexproof. Which is major fun and not in the public eye right now. It plays creatures like Geist of Saint Traft and the like. It won't cost much as Geist was just reprinted in a duel deck. Try and find one and you may love it's bant goodness!

Check out this very cheap deck: Fire Brigade. It was designed for Standard a year ago, but it is much more streamlined than your list.

I am assuming that you are a totally new player. There is nothing wrong with going to a tournament with a cheap deck and losing. That is learning. Just go and prepare to lose every game with the cards you have because this is definitely what is going to happen. In fact, you are basically going to just get stomped with lists like your. As long as you are okay with that, go play, learn, and enjoy.

For the Burn deck, first of all, get rid of Wind-Scarred Crag and Evolving Wilds. Replace all of them with Mountain. If you were thinking that the lifegain wold help you, it will not. The land coming into play tapped is not worth the lifegain, and you have no need for white mana.

Blastfire Bolt is just bad. You will never hit your sixth land drop to play it, and it only targets creatures, not players. There must be at least fifty burn cards in Modern which are better than this card. Even a card like Collateral Damage works better.

Compare Brute Strength in your deck with Titan's Strength.

Burn typically uses Raging Goblin, Monastery Swiftspear, Grim Lavamancer, and Eidolon of the Great Revel as the only creatures.

Goblins can be a great deck with the right goblins, but you usually play a lot of goblins with a little burn. There is nothing wrong with Goblin Piledriver or Goblin Rabblemaster, and they work well together, but your goblin count is low. Cheap solutions could include cards like Dragon Fodder, Krenko's Command, and Hordeling Outburst. Foundry Street Denizen is also a great goblin. Even Raging Goblin is better than Goblin Roughrider.

I am considering adding Reckless Bushwhacker to my goblins deck but only after 4x Goblin Bushwhacker, which is definitely a better card.

A sad fact about M.T.G. is that you cannot just go buy a few packs and be able to build a halfway-decent deck even for Standard. It gets much worse with Modern. I have nearly complete playsets of all common and uncommon cards from Guildpact on up and a whole lot from Mirrodin block and Kamigawa block, yet I still find myself searching for and paying for rares and mythics to be competitive. That is, I have about 85% of all commons and uncommons available in Modern, yet I still find myself regularly needing rares and mythics I do not have to finish decks.

As you learn, you will learn about the archetypes, and you will gradually have money to build your collection. Burn is always the cheapest, and once you have good Modern Burn, it can easily be converted to Legacy. With the sheer quantity of Lightning Bolt which have been printed over the years, the price of the card is stupidly high, but you will never regret having them. They are staples, things you just need in your M.T.G. collection.

Right now is the time to pick up Monastery Swiftspear as they are rotating out of Standard. They are not going to go down much if at all. They are used in Standard, Modern, and Legacy. The card will never not be good. You will get more play value out of plunking down the cash for the one card than you will out of cracking most packs.

alanwescoat yeah I'm fairly new to play ive just been collecting for a while never had anyone to play against, but now my wife and I started to get into playing it. As far as losing goes I dont mind losing as long as I had fun and learn from my mistakes, then I go back and improve my decks for the next time. Thats why I love this game the constant learning and improving that happens is amazing to me lol. Sorry about the painful noob vibe I'm giving off by the way! Lol

I have a suggestion for you, then (but NOT exactly a recommendation).

Here is one of my incredibly cheap lists. Most of the cards will remain in Standard for a while, but a few key ones are set to rotate out soon. Anyway, this deck will cost you about $14, basically the price of four packs (or less), and you actually get 75 cards, the equivalent of five packs (no rares or mythics, though). You will have no trouble getting full sets of these from basically any card shop. They will be happy to get rid of them.

For that investment, you can get the cards and play the with your wife at home. The two of you can take turns piloting the deck while you take the rest of your card pool and try to find ways to deal with it. It will show you how a consistent streamlined deck works. The deck is not a heavy hitter, but it is a solid build with a relatively tiny price tag.
