Mono-Red Taxes

Modern Deck Help forum

I've been watching a lot of pleasantkenobi lately, and last night i had an idea. Is it possible to have mono-red taxes? I did a quick search of attrition cards that are mono-red, and found a surprising amount of them.

The first card that came to mind when i started searching was Manabarbs . After it hits the table, if no damage was done until then its a 20 mana limit on the game. and in modern people run shock lands, fetch lands, and other cards that sacrifice life for effects.

Going off of this, i searched for cards that punish players for using lands. Zo-Zu the Punisher and Burning Earth are pretty sweet. Might need more punishing cards to make the deck work though.

The next attrition strat would be land destruction. With that search I found some pretty cool cards. Stoneshaker Shaman , Akki Blizzard-Herder , Avalanche Riders, Crack the Earth ?, and Thoughts of Ruin were the ones i liked. ( Stoneshaker Shaman + Manabarbs is sick BTW.)

Lastly, card draw. Unfortunately the only card i found that could punish for card draw that could be played in mono red was Spiteful Visions .

I'm rather new to modern, so i don't know the format that well. Just throwing these cards together in a deck with 4 Lightning Bolts wouldn't work, so I'm asking for some advice. Thanks!!

Sounds like a cross between the Land-D of Ponza and some sort of punishment deck. The issues are you don't come online until later. Blood Moon does more punishment because it stops them playing cards. And they hurt you too? Like, maybe you could work out some kind of Wildfire deck?

Seems neat.. but everything that you listed would not function well as a deck (the CMC of all of those is too much). Some of these would be interesting in a Dragon Stompy style deck (prison/Blood Moon, essentially), with Simian Spirit Guide and Pyretic Ritual or something as mana acceleration. I think that'd be kinda cool.

So it seems possible, but you can't have a ton of expensive CMC cards. I don't even know what 1/2 drops would work. Neat concept, that's for sure.

I made what I think is a good shell. It worked great in my first practice round. Added Anger of the Gods to the sideboard after that game. Here's the deck:http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/chaos-taxes/

Aggressive Mining can be fun too.

If you're gonna make this deck, you''ll probably want to play green and play cards like Birds of Paradise, Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl to get it going faster.

Harsh Mentor could work too. For a casual deck, it's certainly a good idea, but it might not work as mono-R in a competitive environment...

@LeaPlath I completely forgot about Blood Moon. Auto include if I'm going to try and make this a competitive deck. I'll try a R/G rampy build and see if Wildfire would work in that build.

@GabeCubed & @filthyc4sual R/G Taxes seems like it could be a thing. Getting a Manabarbs online on turn 3 seems really good. Might be able to include more copies of it if I can reliably cast it on turn 3. I'll throw a R/G version of the deck together and test it compared to my Mono-Red version. Simian Spirit Guide, Birds of Paradise, Arbor Elf + Stomping Ground + cards like Overgrowth would be good ramp sources.

@landofMordor Harsh Mentor is actually going to make the sideboard. Would be good against decks like affinity i think.

If you're going that route, I think nothing can beat a Boom + Goblin Dark-Dwellers combo with Blood Moon backup.
