Mono Black Undying/Sacrifice
Modern Deck Help forum

Hello everybody, this thread will be my first post here :)
I recently had the idea to build a mono black modern deck based on the undying ability (which I find awesome) which logically involves sacrificing creatures. It originally started as a BG deck for creatures such as Young Wolf and Strangleroot Geist, but the mana is just too akward if you want to play a turn 3/4 Geralf's Messenger, to there's that. Also this is not really a budget deck, just a deck I'd like to be competitive enough to have fun with friends who understand the game.
I'm mainly having trouble choosing 1 and 2 CCM cards, defining the right amount of creature/non-creature spells, and the late game might also need improvement. You tell me!
So here's my decklist to this day:
- 3x Viscera Seer
- 2x Mortician Beetle
- 4x Butcher Ghoul
- 4x Disciple of Griselbrand
- 1x Grim Haruspex
- 4x Geralf's Messenger
- 2x Demonlord of Ashmouth
2x Altar's Reap
- 2x Go for the Throat
- 2x Doom Blade
4x Tragic Slip
21x Swamp
I'm also considering these cards:
- 2x Gravecrawler OR 2x Bloodsoaked Champion
- 2x Zulaport Cutthroat (instead of 2 disciples)
I'd say the main mechanic is to get Retribution/Geralf's Messenger/Blasting Station on the board by turn 4, which allows you to remove 3PVs to your opponent for one black mana, so basically death by turn 5. I realize it might seem slow to some of you, but then again the goal is not to build a tier 1 deck.
My creatures choices explained by CCM
- ONE DROPS
Viscera Seer: seems a good one drop to sac and get some card advantage.
Mortician Beetle: can easily become quite big in this deck but has neither undying nor sac ability, so not really sure if it's a keeper.
Gravecrawler/Bloodsoaked Champion: considering black doesn't have one drops with undying such as Young Wolf, these two cards seem to be the best fits for the deck in my mind. Gravecrawler needs a zombie in play (which isn't a big deal here), but the champion might be more versatile.
- TWO DROPS
Butcher Ghoul: best/only undying two drops for black?
Disciple of Griselbrand: allows to sac and might save your ass against burn decks, but is it worth a spot?
Zulaport Cutthroat: let's face it, he's just a cheap Blood Artist proxy.
- THREE+ DROPS
Grim Haruspex: great drawing card here, and that's pretty much it.
Geralf's Messenger: need I say more?
Demonlord of Ashmouth: has both undying and sac ability, which might be tricky. A 6/5 flyer for 2BB still seems good to me though.
Carnifex Demon: I might have been too enthusiastic here. Seemed like a good idea to get -1/-1 counters in the beginning but I'm not so sure now.
So here it is, if you can think of better creatures I'm all ears! Regarding the non-creature spells I might be wrong about the numbers, but I can't really see better cards for what I want to achieve here. Then again, I'm open to critics!
Thanks!

Bloodghast is a great sac option. Though i dont know if you want to keep it strictly undying. Maybe Murderous Redcap.
I Cauldron of Souls could work with undying creatures for infinite combo potential possibly?
