Modern Allies

Modern Deck Help forum

I'm needing help deciding a few things with my new allies deck.

First, I need to know something about their mechanics. Are the allies and their abilities pushed more towards sitting back and eating away at health or for hitting whenever it is possible? My deck seems to be built more towards eating away at health, but with a little bit of a back up with the Lantern Scout and Hero of Goma Fada. I don't know if this is the right way to build an allies deck.

Second, I don't know what in this deck needs removed or put in. I know I am forgetting a lot of other allies from older sets, but I don't know what I should be looking for. The only card in the deck that I know I still need a full set of is the Ondu Cleric. What else should I think towards?

Thank you to anyone who posts comments and helps me with the deck. This is my first time trying to build a serious allies deck.

I think best allies decks include mostly Naya (Red/Green/White) colors.

Something like this probably works?

The big question is how competitive are you trying to be with the deck? Are you trying to win events at your LGS or are you building the deck just to have a modern deck with your friends? What is the. I'd get as well?

frusciante7, I do like the look of the Naya deck, but I was wanting to go more towards Esper because I have always liked most of the blue allies. I'm still trying to find Jwari Shapeshifter since they can make my lifegain or mill from the deck a lot better, and I've seen a few ally decks using a few creatures with changeling, just never found many from my local store.

mathimus55, i'm wanting this deck to be a little of both. All my friends have FNM decks that do quite well, but I have never had a modern deck built for tournaments. I would like for this deck to be able to do very well in tournaments while also being able to use it against my friends.

Concerning Allies, there was a guy at my LGS back in the days (and I mean before they came back with BFZ) with a deck we used to call 'From Outta Space' because it was incredibly resilient and powerful.

It was a Jeskai homebrew.

It was an Ally deck with Jwari Shapeshifter, Akoum Battlesinger, Hada Freeblade and Kazandu Blademaster. Add AEther Vial, Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt and Cavern of Souls and you pretty much have it all.

This guy would own almost everyone by T3/4 consistently and would barely only concede once Torpor Orb would hit the BF.

Well, he now plays Naya colors. I guess that makes a point, coming from a long-time Ally player? I guess Black Allies aren't just as good as the others :)

The link that Frusciante posted is a good start to a list that you could take and do well with at your store. The allies deck is always at it's best when it's a base of RW with white for the core of it's allies and red for Akoum Battlesinger and Lightning Bolt. Naya allies is great because green gives you Collected Company and another great 2 drop with Oran-Rief Survivalist plus all of your really good sideboard cards that green gives.

The list you posted looks like a mix of an allies deck and an Aristocrats deck with all the drain life triggers plus mill. That isn't bad necessarily, but you're essentially taking 2 decks that already aren't great on their own and trying to force them together. If you really want to play Jwari Shapeshifter you could with the full 4 Ally Encampment as well.

Dedicated mill decks aren't competitive, so I would drop the mill aspect right away. It's another case of trying to do 2 different things that on their own aren't the greatest so you're watering down both strategies. If you're trying to win matches at your LGS I would play either dedicated mill or dedicated allies, not a hash of both.

Here is a budget straight RW allies list I've had together. It's a good start for someone trying to get into modern with a straightforward aggro deck that does well against a majority of the field. The deck is right around $100 and most of that is in the Path to Exile playset. I would strongly recommend adding green for the Collected Company and other above mentioned cards. It's still a great deck on theme that won't absolutely run over your friends that are more casual as well.

Allies can do what Fish does: you continuously play lords that keep making the rest of your team larger. The downside is you don't get Spreading Seas and you're in 3+ colors. The upside is you don't get blown out by spot removal or the smaller boardwipes (Anger of the Gods comes to mind).

The list I'd recommend would be something like:

Lands:
1x Breeding Pool
4x Cavern of Souls
1x Forest
1x Godless Shrine
1x Hallowed Fountain
1x Island
4x Marsh Flats
1x Overgrown Tomb
1x Plains
1x Swamp
1x Temple Garden
4x Windswept Heath

Creatures:
4x Bojuka Brigand
4x Champion of the Parish
3x Expedition Envoy
4x Hada Freeblade
4x Jwari Shapeshifter
4x Kazandu Blademaster
4x Oran-Rief Survivalist
4x Phantasmal Image

Other Spells:
4x Collected Company
4x Path to Exile

Sideboard:
1x Gaddock Teeg
3x Kor Firewalker
1x Meddling Mage
2x Qasali Pridemage
2x Scavenging Ooze
2x Spellskite
2x Stony Silence
1x Tajuru Archer
1x Xathrid Necromancer

Most ally decks you will see are fairly aggressive and in Naya colors. You can certainly make a grindier deck -- however the big thing that ally decks need is ally triggers every turn (or almost every turn). It is easy to get an ally trigger every turn in aggressive deck since you often then only need ally triggers for 4 turns in a row. As soon as you start making grindier lists, it can be difficult to ensure consistent ally triggers. One way to Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Another is the combo of AEther Vial and Ally Encampment. Collected Company is also very useful, and I have personally found some uses for Orzhov Charm, and Emeria, The Sky Ruin. But one thing that almost all ally lists have is white. White has by far the most playable allies in Hada Freeblade, Kazandu Blademaster, and Kabira Evangel -- and these should likely be 3-4-ofs in almost any list spare potentially mill combo decks.
