Make Mill Great Again

Modern Deck Help forum

I believe that mill is an archetype that should work in Modern. With all of the fetch lands, Archive Trap is ace. We also have high value cards like glimpse of the unthinkable and Mind Funeral, supported by creatures like Hedron Crab and Jace's Phantasm. Finally, there are removal spells and tools such as Fatal Push and Surgical Extraction, so I ask, why can't we make mill great again and do it in Modern?!

Here is my attempt Modern Delver Mill

The real problem with mill is that it is too slow in modern to contend with dredge decks, delve decks, and general deaths shadow. Unfortunately, all of those decks simply feed off of a massive graveyard, and milling them simply doesn't work.

Unless they go "Fetch" and you respond with quad Archive Trap

Entrei, when you are able to clear the graveyard using Leyline of the Void or Tormods Crypt, then you can beat any deck on Modern which has that style of play.

I am more worried about fast damage decks like Affinity, Tron or Burn.

I'm surprised you're not running Fraying Sanity. A friend of mine plays modern mill and has been saying it's pretty nuts. On a turn four double glimpse you dump 40 cards.

Maxon, Fraying Sanity is great, but I have more success with a but of balance. On T3, if you drop fraying, you cannot play any other mill spells. Then T4, you are almost dead unless you can double glimpse or mindfuneral. It is a good addition to the "maybe board". I could drop Delvers to sell out on Mill, but Delvers actually have helped put pressure on opponents, so IDK.

Psychic Possession + Teferi's Puzzle Box creates insane mill when combined with Jace's Erasure and or Sphinx's Tutelage... Jace's Archivist goes well with this as well im also fond of Thought Scour with that kind of mill engine set up..... bolstered with Consecrated Sphinx and utility from Reliquary Tower for the huge hane you will get....Urza's Mine/Urza's Power Plant/Urza's Tower are woth considering too because its easy to assemble with the puzzle box out.....Psychosis Crawler is nice SB tech for Emrakul, the Aeons Torn....Spell Burst/Condescend can be cute as well with Tron lands.

Hope you found this interesting/helpful

Lantern Control is still one of the best decks in the format. I feel like the ol' "Point mill spells at your opponent until they get decked" is always just a bad version of Burn unless you stay with Archive Trap, Glimpse the Unthinkable, mindfuneral, and Breaking / Entering, then stay strictly on control.

Sphinx's Tutelage is also a pretty hilarious deck when you're on a budget, but it can have a lot of problems.

Mill decks really took a hit when Deathrite Shaman got banned because now they can't do the turn 1 Deathrite Shaman -> turn 2 Ghost Quarter + Archive Trap -> use Deathrite Shaman to still cast a spell.

Thought Scour is very valuable in this design, as it is a net zero to cards in hand and mills two at instant speed - there aren't many better T1 plays than scour + Surgical Extraction. Extirpate is also very important, at the very least in the sideboard, as there simply are no answers to it. You could always sneak Mindcrank and Duskmantle Guildmage into the sideboard as well for an alternate kill option.

I have some copies of Thought Scour, but I don't know what to replace. I can see the value of mainboarding Surgicals or Extirpates, but my T0/T1 choices are really full: Crab, Delver, Phantasm, Fatal Push (if on the draw), Archive Trap (if they fetch), or Tome Scour. I play in a creature heavy meta, so Delver is wonderful follow up for when my Crabs are killed. If I sideboarded Thought Scour to pair with Surgical for storm matchup or ad nauseum, that would be awesome. I am going to maybe board it for now.
