Looking for alternatives to banned cards

Modern Deck Help forum

Hi there I am very new to this forum and magic in general. I’ve noticed that I’ve picked up several banned cards into my decks and they are not modern legal.( Sol Ring Tutor cards, among others) I mainly just play at home with friends around the kitchen table but would like to expand my playing options. How can I change these decks without crippling them?

There is nothing even close to as good as Sol Ring legal in modern. Finding decent substitutes for banned cards will depend on the deck.

Personally, I've never really seen much casual modern. Maybe it's more common in other places. But unless you intend on playing in tournaments, I wouldn't worry about card legality in modern. Keeping casual decks casual is more fun.

If you'd like to have a modern legal deck anyway, then feel free to drop a link to your deck page(s) and we'd be happy to help make deck-specific suggestions. If you do, please also say how competitive you intend to be with your deck. That is, do you want to take it to local game shop tournaments? Or is it for playing casual modern with friends? Or something else entirely?

It would be very hard to make any meaningful comment without any more information about what decks and or cards that are banned.

E.g. why do you need Sol ring? Is it to make an additional mana when comboing off? Then Simian Spirit Guide is for you. As a method of generating masses of colourless mana for Wurmcoil Engine and suchlike? Let me introduce you to Tron (Urza's Tower, Urza's Mine and Urza's Power Plant). Do you need it just because it's such a good card it's banned in Legacy? I dunno pal, maybe modern ain't for you. Vintage is an option I guess.

That's as much help as I can provide without out any information, soz.

I believe he is talking about his Knights n ponies deck. Which looks like the beginnings of knight tribal.

So he simply has to opt for knights with leaner mana cost. I mean the Tribe never been as viable as it is since dominaria.

Please give more info when you post. The short answer to your question is no: there is no direct replacement for banned cards, otherwise they would be banned too. You are just going to have to put completely different cards in most likely. If you had said "I put Preordain into my UR storm deck what do I do?" the answer would be easey: play Serum Visions, but cards like scullclamp and sol ring have no replacement that is good in every deck that was running to original, we need more info to help you. If you are talking about the knights deck, then there is no replacement for sol ring, just play different knights. In an artifact deck Mox Opal would be a great 'replaccement'.

No need to be rude or mean to the OP. They simply don’t know and there’s nothing wrong with being new. No such thing as a stupid question.

OP, I’d just replace sol ring with another knight. Maybe Knight of the White Orchid as a replacement to help you get the mana you need

Mates and I used to play a lot of kitchen table, we used an altered version of the vintage and legacy b&r lists, so like we can play 4 brainstorm (restricted in vintage) but only 1 sol ring. just do what seems fair :-)
