Is this U/B Control competitive???

Modern Deck Help forum

So I've done some testing on this deck, and from what I can tell it's been doing pretty good. But, I'm not sure how it really stands. There's two win-cons: Torment of Hailfire with attacking dragons, or Hedonist's Trove to almost physically beat them with their pile of dead horses. It's a fun deck, and I really enjoy testing it. Any input, from you experienced control users? (Input meaning "yay" or "nay").

Also, I feel I must politely ask that recommendations be to better the deck's current strategy, not change it. It's U/B Control for not-so-serious-but-can-still-go-toe-to-toe play. I just find it a little disheartening when I'm told my deck would be better if I ran "this this this this and this", basically turning it into a Tier 1 stereotypical net-deck, if you guys know what I mean. I know those cards exist, I know their good, I just don't want my deck being a near-mirror image of some pro-level deck. Call me a special snowflake, but it's how I roll. I see the meta, and I strive to make a deck nobody uses because they never thought to. And most times, because they never see it, they don't know how to play against it. Ex: R/G Control. Weird, right? It's a creature-hate deck, to use in creature heavy metas. You never see it, but I love using mine. Anyway, enough ranting! Let's hear about the Goodies!

So, Do you want help or do you not want help? I feel like the community is supposed to help you but not allowed to mention good cards, Which is confusing. In honesty this looks cool/fun. But you will not be getting past turn 4 with it in modern.

There really is no "fun/casual but can still go toe to toe" In modern.

I think you're more looking for a casual deck that's modern legal maybe. I don't see this doing well even at an fnm level at most shops, simply because you're going with suboptimal cards in a format that's trying to achieve turn 3/4 kills, or control out the game. You're lacking good early interaction, doomblades, perplex, and soul manipulation just won't cut it in modern as they're generally too slow. or in doom blade's case don't hit black which is pretty big right now with tasigurs and gurmag anglers running rampant. torment is a cool card but I don't think you're going to be able to cast it for very much value in modern.

I don't know if frontier is still played but you might want to see if this translates well because I think it would.

I would also take out those cataracts because they do you more harm than good in the long run imo

Your RG deck is not a control deck. It's a ramp deck. Its strategy to win games is to play extra lands, clear out smaller threats from faster decks with a sweeper, then play an extra-large creature (bigger than what you'd get if you just dropped a land every turn) and win with that. But you don't really do control-things: you don't trade 1-for-1 and draw extra cards, or hit your opponents mana, or discard their hand.

And while an RG control deck would be new and surprising, RG ramp is not. Most decks have a plan against tron and scapeshift, which will most likely work against you deck just fine.

Good cards are good for a reason, and playing against downgrades is not the same as being surprised by a new deck. There's also cards and synergies which are underplayed or unknown - and they are surprising.

That's just a budget kiln fiend deck, with less focus than most of them (random dragons flying again). these days, this decktype mostly bring a few Thing in the Ice and Monastery Swiftspear. Also, needs Mutagenic Growth.
