im a noob, please Can anyone help build the best deck for cards i have

Modern Deck Help forum

Posted on July 6, 2017, 5:31 a.m. by ultinator

I am new to mtg, I got into it through a friend who plays with some other people but ive only played with him using his spare decks.

I recently got a bumper box thing with 10 boosters in. its all amonkhet. I wont be able to play again for a few weeks, and so cant get help to make a deck in person. I was hoping I could just make a playable deck to start with when i next see my friend.

Can anyone help me or create a deck for me using what cards I have?

I played with my friends blue and red deck before, but i dont know the best combinations... my friend had zombies, lifelinks and was black and white and he ended up with lots of life while i kept losing mine.

I also have put my 'collection' into deckbox.org, so they are all catalogued - a grand total of 135, which i guess isnt many. How do I share my collection on here?

It sounds like you're playing Standard, not modern, but id love to help you build a deck from what you have.

Agree. If all' you have is Amonkhet, you should start with Standard.

If you include a link to your deckbox collection, we can help from there

Amonkhet was a cool time to start playing. A lot of cool mechanics going on and the eldrazi are finally done dominating. I think it should be doable to make a playable deck of your own with what's available. I guess knowing what you have is important first, but what kind of deck do you want to make if you can?

I see you have two Soul-Scar Mages, and a Heart-Piercer Manticore. You can probably make a decently playable red deck for what you have available to you. I'd have to look a little more, but you could certainly start their if you wanted

okay thats awesome. thanks for correcting the link I so badly provided too :D.

I dont know if its completely silly or not, but impulse got the better of me and i ordered a deckbuilder kit thing. I dont have enough red manas to use onlu about 6 i think.

I guess if there is nothing worthwhile here, then maybe ill update the list? Im not trying to get loads of cards or anything. but i thought it wouldnt be bad to have a bit of a choice between which colours to use and how they work, and being able to make half decent playable decks in a variety of colours.

also you guys(/girls) are really helpful. I actually asked on another forum the same thing, and basically got told to get lost as its not worth the effort since there are no cards to use....so i appreciate anyone taking their time to read this or help me, i guess we all have to start somewhere !

So the main issue with your limited card base is lack of consitancy. You iddally want 4 copies of a card where possible. Singles can help with that as a lot of newbie friendly cards tend to be cheap.

How do you want your dream deck to play out? Slow and grind? Fast and aggressive? Sick combos? Tribal creature synergy?

July 6, 2017 4:04 p.m.

ultinator says... #16

Oh I see, well I don't think I have four of anything at the moment.

I like being able for things to appear or suprise tactics but i dont know what colours that represents. but i also like the idea of being able to counter spells, and things like lifelink...I guess I like a bit of it all. Is there an ultimate combo?

July 6, 2017 6:19 p.m.

If you're playing standard, you probably don't want to be countering cards. Wizards has made sure counterspells in standard are pretty bad because they want the party environment to be fun, and most people hate having cards countered. As such, counterspells in standard are bad.

However, it sounds like a RB aggro deck could appeal to you. Powerful synergies, explosive plays, and hopefully a lot of interesting games. In particular, Cartouche of Ambition sounds like a card you would love. You should be able to get 4 at your local game shop for under 50

Oh really?

So its not like you can make a deck using any of the cards that are printed in the current series??

I didnt actually realise there are some allowed and non allowed cards - seems a bit confusing to me since I dont know whats forbidden or not... what are the limitations, or how would i know what cards not to use?

Am i better off using cards from more series than just amonkhet?? (i thought the cards were all used to help eachother and they do that best if they are from the same series..).

Sorry for the beginner questions - I think I misunderstood a load of things so far!

also is RB red and blue, or red and black?

July 7, 2017 3:09 a.m.

IlGuale says... #20

Usually B stands for black and U stands for blue. Then, using cards from different sets is almost always better since they can complement each other. We suggested you to start with standard because it's the format with the smallest cardpool, ad you can see here: http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/standard-formats-magic-gathering

ultinator says... #21

Thanks, I started to have a look at all that stuff.

I have now updated the collection I have to 232 distinct cards I dont know if its enough to make anything with yet though?

Is anybody willing to take a look and help me see if i can or not?

I think with my friend he said he was just using amonkhet cards only.. is it possible to make a deck out of one set only?

I wonder if there is an optimal deck of any colours that is the best from using just my cards alone.? or any recommendations for singles I should look for.

Thanks again!!!

Here is the full list of formats and how to build your deck.

Formats exist to help new players jump into the game. While a lot of people would like it if we could all just play Legacy, MtG would die since decks can be in the thousands of dollars. Not to mention, issues finding cards that haven't been printed in over 2 decades. Plus, there's fewer mechanics to worry about, so you don't just lose to things you've never heard of like Helm of Obedience or Lightning Storm. Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and EDH have hundreds upon thousands of win conditions and interactions. Newer players can be blindsided by these, since they often rely on cards which were printed in different time frames.

Standard is essentially the two most current years of Magic. This means you can build decks easily from cards that are still in print, versus trying to track down older sets. Standard is focused mainly on smacking people with creatures and planeswalkers. I would also recommend doing booster drafts. It's a fast way to build up your collection, you can always just pick cards worth the most money, and it teaches you deck building skills and card interactions. More importantly, it puts you on even footing with everyone else. You don't have to worry about beating a Pro Tour winning deck with a handful of commons.

It's sounds like you'd enjoy playing control, where the goal isn't necessarily winning, but stopping your opponent winning for just long enough to the point where you can't lose.

Here are some examples currently floating around in Standard:

U/W Control
U/R (Izzet) Control

Here are some budget decks over at MtG Goldfish. Some ones you might be interested in:

Esper Haven
Temur Summonings
Turbo Fog

I also copied your card inventory over to TappedOut and built a deck out of it.

Link to your card inventory

You'll want to copy those over to your folders since they're currently sitting in mine.

If you want to jump into another format aside from Standard, Modern is a great place to start! I'd suggest getting yourself more familiar with the game as non-rotating formats can be frustrating for new players due to the unconventional strategies. This can be offputting when games last for only a few turns or when you lose to interactions you didn't think were possible. If that doesn't deter you, and you'd like something different from Standard, let us know and we can point you in the right direction. You may even find yourself building Legacy or EDH in the near future!

Ah wow thanks so much.

I can imagine its a little frustrating, encountering someone such as myself who is lacking in the knowledge department. I appreciate you explaining it in leymans terms!

Also hugely grateful for the suggested deck. I will try that one out :D. I guess I didnt consider the fact everyone is probably just buying exclusively what they want - I as a new person have 0 cards and thought to keep some sort of library of them could be of some benefit but im thinking not really now.

Everything I have listed is either from an amonket bumper box thing that cane with 10 boosters, or its from the amonkhet deck builder kit (which had 4 types of boosters in :/)

I was wondering, if anyone finds making decks like a second language. then basically can I make a strongish AMONKHET ONLY deck, by using just the cards I have, and purchasing singles totalling no more than 20? I know some cards compliment eachother, but I havent really worked out all of them, and my friend just seems to like beating people. He as a zombie deck using just amonkhet and he said for fun (since expansion is coming soon) to try and make one using just amonkhet..

/Thanks to all you lovely people. Faith in Humanity restored :DD

@Doombeard1984, 8PhoenixGamer8, IlGuale: Didn't take much work, mostly just copy+pasting links hahaa.

@ultinator: I meant frustrating for you. A lot of new players try to jump right into older formats and decide Magic isn't very fun, when really it's just that they didn't find the format to play in.

There's another format that isn't supported much anymore on paper (much more popular online) called Block Constructed. Players use only cards from a single block (Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation are the two sets that make up Amonkhet Block) to build their decks. Finding people to play and finding deck lists is difficult. Standard is the much more popular paper format.

The benefit of Block Constructed is your cards are all usable after the other sets rotate out. The downside is how much the metagame changes with each new set that can render top competitors of a previous block obsolete. So back in the original Innistrad Standard with Scars of Mirrodin, Zombies was a powerhouse. Diregraf Ghouls and Gravecrawlers trounced over Delver of Secrets  Flip decks. However, when Mirrodin cycled out of Standard, Return to Ravnica block cycled in. With Supreme Verdict, Boros Reckoner, and Voice of Resurgence, Zombie decks were no longer viable.

I think if you're on a budget of around $20, I'd browse through the budget decks over at MtG Goldfish. I'd especially look at the Ultra-Budget Turbo Fog deck (scroll towards the bottom of the article) if you want to play a control-style deck and troll your friend's Zombie deck.
