Yea so help me break this.
It's literally a red Donate in modern, same cmc, 2R. The most I've come up with is Immortal Coil, Aggressive Mining, Jinxed Idol, and Bazaar Trader.
Help me make a broken Modern Donate deck.

Delusions of Mediocrity, Illusions of Grandeur are pretty nice

Also Soldevi Steam Beast combined with a tap+untap combo is just a cruel way to gain life

After seeing this card you could try a r/g shell w/ mana dorks to accelerate early game and sac later to Jinxed Idol while locking them out of lands w/ Aggressive Mining. Just some food for thought.

You could use Pyromancer's Swath and Steel Golem. There's another creature like Golem for 4 mana, but I don't remember it's name.

A good place for ideas would be Zedruu the Greathearted EDH decks.

Probably want some serious draw/tutor power, if not a lot of controlling cards. I would stick to just 1 combo; probably the Immortal Coil + Relic of Progenitus + Harmless Offering.

To be honest, this and Demonic Pact.
It's not flashy but only needs 2 cards. A control build could easily do this.

@Adrekan that's still legal in standard though. So either you go for a standard b/r control shell or drop in some Terminate, Dismember, bolt, etc. etc....

Grid Monitor is the 4-mana Steel Golem. I don't know if it is worth it though at 4 mana.

If you want them to gain control of enchantments, you'll probably need something like Liquimetal Coating. Then Dark Tutelage may also be a good choice. And Necrotic Ooze could help double down on Bazaar Trader (pair with Grimgrin, Corpse-Born to untap and keep on giving!)

I've been leaning more towards Immortal Coil because it means you can maindeck Leyline of the Void. Combined with Phyrexian Obliterator and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, you get some nice synergy and maindeck graveyard hate.
Anyone messed around with Desperate Ritual et al to power out a more consistent combo early?

@ Sinist3r, true, but just because something is in standard it doesn't mean it won't happen in Modern.
Last night at a funsy event i played against a Green white token deck similar to standard but with a modern spin. Blind sided everyone, to be fair he went 3 wins 2 losses but the 2 losses he got were very close.
Personally, i'd play Esper control (cough cough Supreme Verdict)and find a way to splash a red through fetches. Easily done, and in between tutors etc getting the pieces you need isn't hard

The body on Goldnight Castigator isn't worth its downside, in my opinion. If you're against an aggressive deck, your opponent will be thanking you if you give them a castigator.

Bronze Bombshell would be a funny addition.
Rust Elemental would hurt your opponent a lot, but wouldn't work against affinity.

@Dorotheus: I was thinking about Dark Petition, as well. You get to grab the missing half of the combo, then have enough mana to still cast it.
That also reminds me: are they any "good" multicolor cards we can Donate in Modern? Glittering Wish is another solution that popped up. You would play 3 copies of the Donate card in the main, with the 4th. in the side, giving you 7 copies of the card.

And Relic of Progenitus for Immortal Coil, so maybe some Ingest/Processors.
