What is the forums thoughts on Harsh Mentor and its play ability in the modern format?

I am starting a new loam home brew list and thought about this card.

I don't think it really fits anywhere outside of a burn strategy, and I'm still not sure if its even worth sideboarding there.

I could never make harsh mentor work. If you brew a competitive list with him, let me know, it would give me something to do with my mentors.

definitely not in modern, but it seems fantastic in legacy against the lands deck.

It's mostly a sideboard card. You bring it in when your opponent has stuff they can activate. The big ones are fetch lands and mill rocks.

I think with the amount of fetchlands most decks use, it's definitely worth at least a sideboard inclusion in some decks. Not all decks, that's for sure. But it's not a bad card, unless you're facing off against Burn or something similar (in which case this would be very bad in a mainboard). Tron comes to mind as a matchup in which I'd like to have this guy in play? All those artifacts that activate to fetch lands, and even their removal is ability based, be it artifact or planswalker, so you're still getting damage out of Harsh Mentor even as it's dying

To sum it up, I like it, would maybe include it in a burn deck, or sideboard it in something that has the free slots for it.

I have seen some kind of DnT variant splashing red for Magus of the Moon and Lightning Bolt but I have no clue whether it performed well or not.

As much as I love the card, I don't think it's strong enough for Modern. Especially for a 2 cmc slot :/

Verdict: Sideboard card against Tron and Sideboard in Legacy?

Is there a variation idea burn deck that wants Harsh Mentor in the main?
