GPSJ Modern Meta Call

Modern Deck Help forum

Hey Tappedout family! So short and simple. What do you anticipate to see play in Modern at Grand Prix San Jose? I expect a resurgence in tron decks.

Do you think Infect or Dredge will see less play in Modern, due to the recent banning of Gitaxian Probe and Golgari Grave-Troll?

I plan on playing either 1 of 2 decks: Abzan Midrange or Sultai Control. What do you think?

I anticipate Tron, Infect, Jund, Burn, and Merfolk. What say you?

To be honest, I don't think that infect will be affected heavily. Dredge is dead. its a legacy deck now. I would see control being much better in this updated meta. we'll see what happens. your guesses are probably accurate, but throw in lantern control and mill since dredge is out of the format.

I hear you guys. Grixis may be more powerful. They lost Probe, sure, but also saved their life totals a lot. Between that and Turn 1 "fetch" I am sure.

Dredge isn't dead. The consensus is to replace Troll with Thug and cut Scourge Devil for Haunted Dead and call it a day. It's certainly still viable, as is Infect.

Jund and Abzan will be popular, as will Tron (expecting those two decks). Affinity and Burn will be the aggressive decks of choice. Given all of this, I would choose to play Abzan out of your options. Lingering Souls is excellent in the BG mirror and against Affinity, and your options against Burn are good. I am not sure how much better Sultai is against Tron than Abzan, but I would likely choose the latter nonetheless.

GlistenerAgent I agree with you on Dredge. The deck is still amazing game 1. I had considered Sultai in lieu of Abzan if a lot Tron was expected. The reason I had considered this was due to counter magic and Spell Pierce being better than lightning bolt against a turn 3 Karn Liberated. Perhaps you are spot on with Burn & Affinity.

Affinity has been "low key" since prior to the banning. I think that and Burn will be pretty good to play.

I think Titan Shift is going to see a lot more play that it was previously. I agree that there will be more tron decks, especially Eldrazi Tron.

Sultai MIGHT be better against the field but I will be playing abzan in general in modern because its more of an interesting deck for me. I just think sultai is worse than grixis against the field but better than abzan against the field but worse than both against eachother.

The current most important thing in my opinion is to have singular answers to massive threats, seeing as bant eldrazi, abzan, jund, and tron are all doing extremely well. As for hate, artifacts are important to shut down as always, and it would be really useful to have something like Grand Abolisher or Voice of Resurgence. Just my thoughts from looking at the rankings. Overall, I think white is the best defensive color to play in modern, which is what you want when making meta calls. Also, if you really, really don't like tron, play something with Gaddock Teeg

Gaddock Teeg is sweet. That is a house against Tron. Abzan would be great with him.

With the introduction to GW tron and GB tron hes really not that great they would just kill him and clear with ugin. Sure he stops them if they dont have that but I feel like either you not drawing him or them killing him makes him too much of a liability. Just play Fulminator Mage and Surgical Extraction and take away their lands its actually fairly effective if anything fulminator will give you time to beat them in with goyf.

On a side note if you try abzan check out Renegade Rallier I have been testing him and he has been SWEET if you turn 2 Tarmogoyf/ Grim Flayer/Scavenging Ooze then they kill it and you turn 3 fetch land into this guy (not super uncommon) then its a big tempo swing. You can also discard extra goyfs and stuff to Liliana of the Veil and use him to get them back and cheat on mana.

EmblemMan you bring up good points about Renegade Rallier. This thing with Collective Brutality works sweet together too.

I'm still predicting that // gets out of hand.

Push > Snap > Push is a very real thing now.

Grixis control and Grixis Delver both seem incredibly strong on paper specifically since now there's no need for W for hard removal. A package of Push, Bolt, and Terminate backed with snap and counters is just hard to beat.

I can't think of anything to help the matchup really though, sorry.

If you do play Abzan, I highly recommend a Dark Confidant version. You can play Grim Flayers and try to be super low-curve like Sam Pardee, or go for a couple of four-drops and be a bit more traditional. If you're interested in being traditional, something like the following maindeck could be nice:

4 Dark Confidant, 4 Tarmogoyf, 2 Scavenging Ooze, 2 Siege Rhino

2 Abrupt Decay, 3 Path to Exile, 3 Fatal Push

4 Liliana of the Veil

4 Lingering Souls, 3 Inquisition of Kozilek, 3 Thoughtseize, 1 Collective Brutality, 1 Maelstrom Pulse

24 lands, in some assortment

I would put at least one more Brutality in the board as well. The card is excellent. It's also possible the 3rd Ooze should be in the main, too.

Check out my page. The Abzan I would most likely run is on there named "The Abzan House."

It's basically between that and "Golden Command."

I like it, for the most part. Isn't four Baubles too many?

Also, you're crazy not to play four Lingering Souls, it's the most important card by a lot in the mirror and good vs. almost everything. Would recommend Zealous Persecution in your sideboard as well to kill opposing Spirits, and it's also good against Affinity and Infect.
