FNM

Modern Deck Help forum

Posted on April 10, 2018, 11:04 p.m. by jordybear2002

Ok so I think I might go to an FNM sometime in the near future but I have never been to one. So I have two questions and one of them is not about FNM LOL. Question 1. Since I have never been to a FNM what deck runs best or what type of deck runs best? I would prefer a budget deck but I can probably go for around $70-100 but I still need one that will still pull me through. Question 2. Why is Sylan Library good??? I just don't get why it is.

You can build a pretty solid burn deck for 100.

As ballisticexperiment said, youre best bet will be burn. As far as getting results with it, well, i wish you luck. Alot of FNMs depend on a few things. The first thing is: how competitive the folks at your LGS (local game shop) are. You can usually base this on how Much if at all a buy in to play is. I have two LGS in my area, one charges 10 bucks to play and we usually get 20-30 players, and its highly competitive. My 2nd shop, charges 6 bucks and its usually 10-15 players and its more of a learning curve (burn will perform better at these types of venues.) If you play at a competitive LGS, expect to see non budget builds where atleast half of the players are looking to cash in store credit to build better decks for the pro tour and regional tourney qualifiers.

is my burn deck. Blue and red are my colors that I am not experienced in. So if th deck is crap it's because I am terrible at burn. Help will be accepted and appreciated.

or you can go with green stompy..they have some pretty nice upgrade in this coming set.

Steel Leaf Champion comes to my mind. and its relatively cheap its more resilient to life gain deck and can race as well...

FNM is pretty much dependent on what players are playing. They could either play a deck they find on the internet or a strange brew they build.

For a $70-$100 modern budget deck, In my opinion, the best way to win with a budget of $70-$100 range is fringe decks that aren't seen a lot of competitive play nowadays (Stompy, Tokens, etc.). Even though they aren't seen in a lot of competitive play, they are still competitive and they don't have much of a high price point compare to other top tier modern decks.

Funkydiscogod, 1. That combo is insane. And couldn't they just take a land?? It says just a permanent and not a no land permanent. Just my line of thinking. And plus it would be my first FNM. Nitropotent 1. Is goblin matron modern legal? And 2. If the answer is yes could a kernel deck make it with cards like Mob Justice and other cards like that?

Krenko not kernel.

jordy, the person casting Harmless Offering chooses which permanent the opponent gets. also, it should be fairly obvious why Sylvan Library is good. it digs for the cards you need.

also, a quick gatherer search will confirm that neither Goblin Matron or Mob Justice is modern legal. Krenko, Mob Boss is too slow for modern. its not playable until turn 4, not usable until turn 5, and the tokens it creates can't attack until turn 6. modern is a format where Through the Breach can put an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn into play turn 3 with haste.

jordybear2002 Goblin Matron isn't a modern legal goblin. I highly doubt Goblin Matron will be reprinted in Domanaria but Domanaria is still on the spoiler season.

I'm not too sure if Krenko, Mob Boss is too strong in the modern format. I haven't play against someone who plays Krenko, Mob Boss in FNM. Making a brew of Krenko could be fun to build around. I think you should wait for Domanaria to come out and add modern legal goblins like Goblin Warchief. Maybe Modern Goblins could be a thing.

In addition to what other already siggested.

Modern goblins is defenitely playable and without Goblin Guide ist should be very affordable.

Library is not modern legal so thats not the place to ask but it lets you draw two additional cards if you want to pay the life even if you dont want to pay you get to chose 1 of 3 cards and you can shuffle away cards you dont want with a fetchland. Thats a pretty strong effect.

Lets be real and don't bullshit the newbies.
Turn 3 emrakul is not something you gonna see very often. Since its a 3 card combo. It has ~15% chance to happen in Through the Breach decks, that run 4 of all combo pieces and 4 Simian Spirit Guide.

And lets not forget that the deck is one of the 1% decks.

Turn 3 storm kill is realistic, and the deck is more played as well. (However you can sideboard against that in every color)

Hey Xica, it's ok. He was just suggesting and I think I can try to work around that. I do thank you for watching out and I do understand where you are coming from. I just don't want to cause an argument between two people just because opinions don't meet. I am not calling you out just saying thank you for watching out.

Granted I have not been to FNM in years and am a little out of touch for this thread but I do have some advice. PLAY WHAT YOU WANT TO PLAY! FNM brings a wide scope of players ranging from the ultra competitive spike players to squirrel tokens are hillarious... Attend your LGS FNM and just feel it out for if you want to return how to improve your deck to make it more suitable/competitive... You can do a lot with $70-$100 in modern as far as an initial investment (combined with what you already own).

Icbrgr says... #17

My point is to just have fun with it. Modern may be a "competitive" format and there is always gonna be "that guy" with a deck that has a Mana base that could pay the rent and gets the T3 Griselbrand/Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. But burn/elves or even mono blue illusion tribal can definitely get quite a few wins... Just using this sites Modern and Budget Hubs can show you some really wicked/fun brews that have room to grow.

Xica the point i was making was to illustrate how brutal modern can be. you're focusing too much on the specific example i used. turn 3 Karn Liberated into turn 4 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon can happen too and either one of those cards that early can potentially end the game alone.

but at the same time, i should also mention don't let big powerhouse decks scare you from going in with a brew. i often get top 4 at my FNM with a 5C sliver deck that cost me a little over $400.

newb question: Are there Modern FNM's? I thought FNM was standard only.

April 11, 2018 11:01 a.m.

Icbrgr says... #21

@Tezdemona depends on the store.... in a lot of cases its just Commander/EDH and standard/Draft but some stores depending on attendance and demand do hold modern format tornements.... i too have been on the fringe of wanting to go to FNM (but ive never played standard and am not big on EDH) But after asking around when shopping for singles I found one place by be that has a Modern FNM.

Tezdemona it really depends on the store and the crowd there. At my store, we have 2 locations. between those, we have Modern magic Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!! Modern is a lot bigger than standard where I play, so each night will fire.

We also have legacy once or twice a month and standard twice a week, along with a commander league over the weekend. We have a lot of support for all formats!

If you want to play different formats at a store, bring it up to you LGS owner and crowd. If enough people support a game mode, the store will often host one to try and see how it turns out. Sometimes, you can even have a league that supports up to 4 proxy cards to keep it competitve (legacy dual lands are silly) so this helps keep it feel real, but obviously you'd want to buy those for actual tournament play!

Examples from me are both legacy and Thursday night magic were added in the last year for my LGS because we all asked for more, so the owner gave us a few options and we all picked what worked for us and supported the store as best we could.
