Deck to play in Heavy Control Meta?

Modern Deck Help forum

Hey! My local meta is super control heavy and i've been getting smashed recently. I've been playing shadow and abzan to no luck. Any suggestions for decks i should try?

Go aggressive! Burn, Goblins, Affinity, Green Stompy, anything that's fast enough to not let them settle their gameplan.

But really... BURN!

I'm personally not much of a burn fan, will get bored of it really quick. You're totally right though, burn is probably great in the meta.

Play a different form of control, as most control decks only run 3 to 4 creatures and they are usually small ie Snapcaster Mage you could be 8 rack. Control the hand control the game! Some rack builds can get pretty pricey though but it should do work in your meta. You could try a death and taxes build as well.

Or Lantern Control? It's a strong control deck that can possibly set everything up before them and lock them out ;)

From what i understand lantern control isnt even fun for the guys that pilot it. Constant headache, what to make your opponent shuffle what not to, just a lot of thinking and proper timing mechanics. But, to each their own.

I don't like it either, just throwing in some ideas for the guy :)

Green based midrange deck.

Thrun, the Last Troll is the bane of control decks. Any creature like Voice of Resurgence or a spell like Lingering Souls that will require more than 1 answer from them. Go for taxes - Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or even the simple Dryad Militant are very scary for a control deck featuring snapcaster mage.

G/W Hatebears seems like amazing deck against control. I also think that Grixis Shadow is pretty good against control.

Boggles is an absolute bitch to play against if you're control with a lot of spot removal. It's either you Supreme Verdict/Anger of the Gods immediately or you lose asLightning Bolts, Path to Exiles, and Fatal Pushes sit with zero targets.

Green ramp into Tooth and Nail can be fun and if you run a Boseiju, Who Shelters All control just has to sit and watch

Yeah any big mana deck is going to be difficult for control. Tooth and Nail like Unlife said, but also any Tron variant.

Merfolk are good against control. It has Aether Vial to get around counterspells, Kira, Great Glass-Spinner against removal, and Mutavault that survives sweepers. And that's all mainboard cards. Add counterspells like Spell Pierce and Squelch in the SB, and it's actually a pretty good match-up.

Merfolk is pretty good against control, and will do well in such a meta. But if you want to absolutely destroy them, the answer is a big-mana deck like Titanshift or old-school Tron.

Monoblue tron, perhaps? Objectively speaking not the greatest deck, but I imagine it would do well against control.

I know you said you've played Abzan without much success against Control but BG/x can be built to be very lethal against Control.

Abrupt Decay, Choke, Treetop Village, Scavenging Ooze, Thrun, the Last Troll are all strong against control.

Liliana of the Veil, Lingering Souls, Bitterblossom, Sword of Fire and Ice, Leyline of the Void/Rest in Peace are situationally strong.

Even a Dark Confidant that sticks can overwhelm a slower control deck.

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions everyone! My picks are basically trying out different variations of Abzan since i've already got it, cheers APPLE01DOJ. I'll also try a big mana deck like Tooth and Nail too, thanks Unlife. I've been looking at bogles for ages, but friends have been telling me not to play it, maybe worth a shot, cheers sylvannos

You could play a Jank hexproof/can't be countered deck, fun and unique and obviously good vs control
