Chained to the Rocks in Modern Burn?

Modern Deck Help forum

I've recently started building boros burn in modern and i'm on not the most robust budget let's say. I've seen some lists running Chained to the Rocks in the sideboard's instead of Path to Exile supposedly because it doesn't give the opponent an extra land. Obviously it falls to enchantment hate but does the price difference really reflect effectiveness? Is there any merit to keeping it in the board even after I can reasonably afford Path's? Thanks for helping!

There are some differences. You wouldn't be able to argue one over the other is strictly better, but Path to Exile is certainly more preferable. Chained to the Rocks also dies to land destruction effects such as Ghost Quarter and Spreading Seas , however it can bypass Dispel without fail unlike Path to Exile . Decks that you really wouldn't want to be giving free lands to would be Scapeshift decks, but those decks don't really play creatures, so that's sort of a mute point. Path to Exile is mainly good at disrupting infinite combo decks that wish to out-race you and that's where instant speed really matters.

i would argue that Path to Exile is certainly strictly better. the price difference absolutely reflects effectiveness in this scenario. one is instant speed and permanent, the other is sorcery speed and temporary. i've always seen Path to Exile in the mainboard. i wouldn't run Chained to the Rocks at all, let alone after you can afford Path's.

I know several burn players who swear by Chained to the Rocks in their sideboard. I think Path is generally preferred because of its instant speed ability. However I certainly think you can played Chained to the Rocks over path and save yourself the $20 for other cards. Good luck!!!

Really good sideboard card, but not maindeck due to Abrupt Decay / Assassin's Trophy / Reclamation Sage /etc. etc.

As a burn player, you want instant speed and the ability to respond. Enchantments are not fast enough. You are a burn player you are going to kill them by turn 4 or 5. That one land they get might not mean that much.
