Bushwhacker Zoo with Aether Revolt

Modern Deck Help forum

Hello everyone!

I am looking for thoughts from other zoo players on the potential upgrades for the deck from Aether Revolt, Narnam Renegade as a Kird Ape with deathtouch, Hidden Herbalists as Burning-Tree Emissary 5-8, and maybe even Greenwheel Liberator.

Narnam Renegade seems to be the most likely addition, and this deck has already made top 16 of an SCG Classic: New Zoo.

Playing 8 Burning-Tree Emissarys is also appealing, so here is a rough draft of a more all-in version based around the power of that it and Hidden Herbalists: Hidden Zoo.

It is also possible that none of these additions are worthy. This is my current list that I have played and tuned over many months: Naya Zoo.

I am seeking anyone's opinions on which version of zoo is most likely to be the best moving forward.

Thanks for your help!

I think that both Hidden Herbalists and Narnam Renegade are potent additions to the Zoo card pool, and both of them should be incorporated into the 75. Of the lists you've linked, the Hidden Zoo one is the one I'd be the most excited about going forward. Anything that makes those super-fast starts more likely to occur seems good to me.

Just some experience from playing at a Super IQ last weekend: I played against 2 guys from the same shop that were trying out the cards mentioned in a very similar list, about 70 cards were the same from your lists. I beat one of them(I was playing Abzan Company with Renegade Rallier) and neither of them liked the Hidden Herbalists. They mentioned that more often than not they were the end of the chain since they did not make red mana like BTE. The revolt trigger was also much harder to get than they were hoping, and they both said they wouldn't be playing with them again since they can only chain into another copy of Herbalist or a BTE, they can't even main phase an Atarka's Command or Reckless Bushwhacker which is the big payoff for the deck. They did say Narnam Renegade was usually a better Experiment One since they could at least play them post combat and get the revolt trigger usually. The Hidden Herbalists were too narrow in what they did that the Bushwhacker Zoo probably isn't the place for them since they end up being so specific it's sometimes a win-more card.

Yeah honestly, all of these cards look pretty damn great for this deck. Everyone's been talking about Narnam Renegade and Hidden Herbalists a lot, but I think Greenwheel Liberator deserves mention. In this deck.... I actually think it's better than Tarmogoyf.

Let's think about it for a minute. On turn 2, what card types are you usually going to have in your graveyard? It's probably just gonna be a fetch, unless you decided to T1 Bolt or Path them. What about later in the game? You yourself can only ever have 3 card types in your graveyard. And while yes, this obviously doesn't count the opponent's graveyard and while yes they will eventually do your job for you unless they're playing a weird-ass deck, that's not always going to be the case early in the game. Sometimes for the first three or even four turns, that Goyf is going to be a 3/4. And that's where Greenwheel Liberator is better. It is unfortunately weak to Lightning Bolt, but I don't think that's enough to make it unplayable. At the very least that deck finally has a decent budget replacement for Goyf.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone!

I have been testing this list with all of the new cards, and it seems to have potential so far: Revolt Zoo

rothgar13, mathimus55, KillDatBUG, do you think that this list is optimal or should I stick with the Naya Zoo list linked above?
