Desecration Demon can be good in decks with lots of anti-creature spells.

Oh right. i forgot these. Erebos, God of the Dead, Erebos's Titan, Bloodline Keeper  Flip. Also, do you have a specific list for this mono black deck? Could you post it?

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Abyssal Persecutor, Mirri the Cursed, Desecration Demon, Tasigur, the Golden Fang (still counts dammit!)

And that's about it. Sure, you can throw in some cheese like Liliana's Reaver, but you're gonna have a bad time. Nothing really comes close to the obliterator.

Ashling, the Extinguisher isn't bad either in the right deck. Liliana's Reaver and Avatar of Woe are options also.

you have a decklist we can look at? there might be a few more niche cards that might work depending on what type of deck you are running. i mean as it stands right now i can't think of many 4 drops that are better than Phyrexian Obliterator. It would also be useful to know why you don't want that card. is it the price tag? if so i wouldn't suggest Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet even though that would probably be one of my first suggestions otherwise. is the reason the 4 black mana symbols? ie you are playing several utility lands like Ghost Quarter and etc that make it hard to get 4 black?

Abyssal Persecutor is pretty much my favorite creature in MtG.

He whittles opponents down singlehandedly in record time. Here is a deck I built around him.

Dirty Demons

In addition to the above suggestions, I have found a 1-of Sidisi, Undead Vizier to be quite a bomb. A big butt that trades profitably with almost everything in modern, and can also act as a tutor. Especially nifty if you are playing Gravecrawlers.

Herald of Leshrac is heavy on mana but is some super-secret tech that dunks on midrange and control decks. Grave Titan is also above the curve you were asking for, but it's worth mentioning because of how powerful it is.

I agree with others on Abyssal Persecutor. It's probably the best budget beatstick in mono-black in Modern. Desecration Demon isn't really viable in metagames with Lingering Souls.

The other thing to think about are the larger infect creatures, which are Phyrexian Crusader, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, Phyrexian Juggernaut, and Phyrexian Vatmother. You lose the ability to win via normal damage and life loss, but you gain creatures that are really efficient for their mana cost.

Distended Mindbender and Abundant Maw are also reasonable when combined with things like Solemn Simulacrum. Speaking of Eldrazi, don't forget the plethora of colorless creatures that you can jam into your mono-black deck. That includes stuff like Wurmcoil Engine, Duplicant, Grid Monitor, Silent Arbiter, Scuttling Doom Engine, and Steel Hellkite.

Lastly, there's Demigod of Revenge. You can combine them with Smallpox and other such discard outlets for maximum value. Nothing like dumping 15 power into play on turn 5!

Its smaller than you were asking for but Vampire Nighthawk works well for early devotion, Geralf's Messenger is pretty good too. Black Knight is really good for early devotion. Then pound an obliterator next turn and gary after that and youve pretty much won! Congrats!

aholder7 i do have a decklist im working on, its more of a midrange deck but im not up to sharing it juts yet ;) i have one Phyrexian Obliterator but cant find other copies from where im around so subs are what im looking for. my curve ends at 5cc with Batterskull at the moment as a 2 of. but i do plan on moving it to sideboard.Desecration Demon really caught my eye but as sylvannos said Lingering Souls is deffinately an issue =( kinda breaks my heart.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet,Erebos, God of the DeadSidisi, Undead Vizier look hella good tho, damn legends why u have to be legends ahahaha ill defff consider.Korlash, Heir to Blackblade i fear will get chump blocked all day

I'll help you out once you share the list. As is, sounds a bit slow for modern.

To repeat what's already been stated. Abyssal Persecutor is the best mono black midrange wincon in modern. Nyxathid and Death's Shadow are pretty good but both are also build around cards.
