Zendikar plotline

I started playing magic with the release of the 2011 Core Set. My first card was Admonition Angel, which my cousin gave to me from a pack a short while earlier. While I'm aware of the general plotline, my question is: What was the story like as it was being released? While the eldrazi were hinted at in stuff like Eldrazi Monument and Eye of Ugin, along with references in flavor texts, what did we know about Zendikar before the release of Rise? My perception and knowledge about the plane is pretty tied to the Eldrazi, and I was wondering what the story and lore and plot hooks were before the Eldrazi were released. Anyone able to help?

The Zendikari are the ones hunting down the remaining eldrazi.
Ob Nixilis hates Zendikar and has spent enough time there to fill a few life times so I don't see him having any desire at all to ever return there. He probably doesn't even know of the deaths of Ulamog and Kozilek nor would he particularly care.
Sorry for not really having an answer for the OP. I've actually wondered the same thing before. ZendikariWol sounds right though with the first sets building up the "adventure world" theme.

Thank you for all the responses, you guys are great! Second question: Was the name of Rise of the Eldrazi not public until shortly before its release? I know New Phyrexia had an alternate public name for suspense, Eldritch Moon had its set symbol withheld, and we don't know the name of the third Ravnica set.

Actually the Eldrazi are really the only big plot thing that happened on Zendikar. The first Zendikar sets were just establishing the setting. Fortunately, Zendikar has setting for days.
