In the world of mtg, what is a praetor, such as Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger? Can you give me a bit about their background?

Praetor's are leaders of Phyrexia; specifically they are the rulers of the different aspects or philosophies of Phyrexia. Yawgmoth is the true leader of Phyrexia, but his current whereabouts are unknown as far as I am aware.

Elesh Norn is the leader of white, which believes in religiously and aggressively assimilating all life into Phyrexia.Jin Gitaxis is pretty much a mad scientist that performs experiments to improve Phyrexia.Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger is of the opinion that the strong will survive and wishes to make his brood the strongest and most deadly.Sheoldred I honestly can't say. I have no clue what her deal is.Urabrask is the leader of the Iron Works, which makes Phyrexian's I think. I'm not sure what they make, but he's basically a foreman I think.

A Praetor is one of the leaders of Phyrexia on New Phyrexia, formerly Mirrodin. There is one in each color and they each lead a different part of Phyrexia. Elesh Norn is in charge of the Machine Orthodoxy, Jin Gitaxias is in charge of the Progress Engine, Sheoldred is in charge of the Seven Steel Thanes, Urabrask is in charge of the Quiet Furnace, and Vorinclex is in charge of the Vicious Swarm.

Lmoyer Thanks!

Quick question, are gitaxian things, like Gitaxian Probe created by Jin Gitaxis then?

Explain Ebon Praetor. Is it part of the phyrexian order?

@NecroPony In the subtype, it never actually says it's a praetor. I think it may be referring to the ancient roman Praetors

NecroPony no. Praetor as a word existed long before the Phyrexian thing.

Okay, lets get two facts down. If you mean praetor, the word, it means an ancient roman leader who was in charge of everything - much like an emperor, except they also had religious duties. A praetor from magic is one of the five leaders of Phyrexia in Yagmoth's Absence (probs dead.). They are also the ones that if you play them in commander, all your friends will hate you.

If we are unsure about Yawgmoth what is the explanation for Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

It is my understanding that the Lore reason for the card is that Yawgmoth had such a mastery of mana that even in death his tomb still radiates and corrupts all land around it.
