Edgar Markov

Lore forum

With the spoilers of a vampire tribal deck for EDH I saw a few posts saying the commander might be Edgar Markov the grandfather of Sorin Markov which is my favorite planeswalker, but I was wondering who he was since I never saw any mention of him anywhere (I think it's worth mentioning I only started playing since BFZ)

I mean is Edgar dead or something because he never appeared in Shadow over Innistrad (unless I'm mistaken) and I was wondering if somebody could tell me more about him

Edgar Markov was the first Vampire on Innastrad. He became a Vamp by exsanguinating an Angel and did some voodoo with her blood. He mainly wanted to become a Vampire so that he could be immortal because he was getting quite old. Sorin is his Grandson and when the trauma of becoming a Vampire affected Sorin it ignited Sorin's planeswalker spark. We do not know what became of Edgar as far as I am aware in the lore. I don't know if he is dead or alive.

Also he has been confirmed to be that Vampire in the spoilers

Yeah i knew all that from wiki and i think it's weird. It's like he just vanished from the lore.

Yeah it is weird that's for certain. It's exciting though that he will finally have a card. Maybe we will learn more too through his card or some others.

I was so upset when they killed Avacyn and imprisoned Sorin in the last innistrad set they're the reason i started playing mtg in the first place i just hope we see more of Sorin Vs Nahiri or a duel deck that end the battle between the two of them

I too was saddened by Avacyn's demise... She will always be one of my favorite Creatures in all of Magic. And I was very surprised that Nahiri was able to overwhelm Sorin. He's been around the block a few times after all. It would be really cool to see a rematch though.

Sorin lost just because he's not a member of the Jacetice League, which is extremely depressing. I hope they don't get rid of him.

I believe there was mention of Edgar being alive during the sealing and opening of the Helvault with Avacyn in one of the wiki's.

If true then that could mean he was present in Markov Manor when Nahiri attacked it.

In the Magic story podcast from yesterday, Alison Luhrs mentioned that Edgar's status is currently unknown. Like, his card could be him "yesterday, or a thousand years ago". I'm willing to bet he was just too cool to be around Innistrad when Nahiri struck.

KingMathoro, it's not super surprising, given that Nahiri was comparably powerful to Sorin to begin with (when they made a pact with Ugin to contain the Eldrazi), she was the one who crafted the hedrons of Zendikar, and then she had a few thousand years to plot revenge while she was locked up in the Helvault, after she confronted Sorin about his absence on Zendikar. I think Nahiri and Sorin could be a really interesting grudge match, as long as the status quo isn't "I'll kill your family, you kill mine"...it'll need to evolve into a more nuanced relationship to hold my attention.

In other news, what do y'all think Edgar will be mechanically? I'm predicting a RWB vampire warrior, with some sort of ability that ties together the gain'n'drain of Zendikar with the discard shenanigans of SOI.

I was thinking maybe:

"WB, Discard a card: Each opponent loses 2 life and you gain life equal to the life lost this way."

I'm not sure if that would be too strong.

Nah I'm sure he's going to be something with vampire tokens/vampire abilities. Remember, it's tribal and he's the original vampire.

Like

"Grandpappy Markov, OG Vampire"

Legendary Creature: Elder Vampire

Eminence: as long as Grandpappy Markov, OG Vampire is in your command zone or on the field, vampires you control get +1/+1 and lifelink.

Discard a card: Put a 1/1 vampire token with flying, deathtouch and haste onto the field."

5/3

I don't think madness will be a thing in here since personally i think it's pretty weak

He's the first vampire so yes probably an ability targeting all vampires (maybe turning others into vampires) and something to do with lifelink since he drained an angel to become a vampire (cause that make sense)
