Chandra, the Elementalist?

So all three new cards for Chandra in C20 allow her to either create or care for elementals. She also has a small slew of elemental creatures tied to her via name.
So my question is, with an established history of being able to manifest Elementals, why is it she has always been the sort of "kill it with fire" Planeswalker, instead?
Another way to ask this very same question (With regards to going down the same line of answering) is this: "Why hasn't this been explored more, and why only now delve into it?"
Additional, I'm curious as to what users on this site think. Do you like Chandra being an Elementalist? Does it feel too odd and is off-putting? Do you think we will see this in a regular and continued basis now? Will Jaya Ballard become our returning Pyromancer?
Yes, but WHEN and WHY was it established that suddenly she can create life out of fire?
And if it's always been the case, how come it hasn't really been explored until now?
Feels like a really hard pushed retcon.

It was probably the lack of creativeness on the WOTC card design team and after the whole Eldrazzi arc with her using fire to roast two of them, with some help from Nissa and the leylines of Zendikar. After that people probably just had the image of her being an unstoppable force of fire rather than a creator of elementals.

I think they are just trying to explore more design space with her so she isn't just "mE gO bUrN sTuFf!" It makes sense to me that the main fire planeswalker might craft beings of fire

I'm not sure she's really "creating life out of fire." Chandra's Spitfire and Chandra's Phoenix seems to be more like flames shaped into temporary recognizable forms, similar to (maybe just my interpretation of) Master of Waves 's tokens being water temporarily given form. Chandra was introduced in the Lorwyn block, but did she ever come into contact with flamekin?

In many of the M20 cards, flavour text shows the set being primarily based in Zendikar. Her only Planeswalker cards that have to do with elementals are either in Core Sets or a single one in Zendikar. We could assume that the leylines give her this ability.

Since she spends so much time with Nissa: it's actually kinda surprising there is not scene where Nissa shows Chandra how to make a type of elemental (or a more stable elemental).
I would love to say this is influence from Nissa, but I don't think that is actually true.
