Khans Draft - what to look out for

Limited forum

I'm going to my first Khans Draft tonight and i've spent the last week staring into the manual that came with the fat pack and i think i have a fair understanding of what is good but i turn to the wonderful T/O community to get confirmation.

What cards should i try to pull out if i see them? Now obviously i know this will depend on what is getting passed, what my first pack holds etc. If i crack a Fetch i'm taking it as i want to get into modern and obviously any money rares i'll pull them of course but for like regular draft tech if the pack has a crap rare what common or uncommon should i pounce on. for example, Nessian Asp was a beast in draft/limited when theros came out. Cards like that.

Yes i'm dumb and desperate But thank you for humoring me.

May you never be mana screwed

Well in terms of money drafting, some cards you might not think are worth a lot, but actually are: Dig Through Time , Mantis Rider , Siege Rhino , Jeskai Ascendancy

Riverwheel Aerialists are good. Abzan Falconer is good. High Sentinels of Arashin are great. Most of the charms are great. Lands are really important for your fixing. Removal is important. Ponyback Brigade , Abzan Guide , most of the 6 mana 3-color creatures are good. Treasure Cruise , Chief of the Edge , Kin-Tree Invocation , Ride Down , Arc Lightning , Murderous Cut , Suspension Field , Hordeling Outburst , Heir of the Wilds , Seeker of the Way , Disdainful Stroke , Monastery Swiftspear , Unyielding Krumar , Mardu Warshrieker , Timely Hordemate , Mardu Hordechief , Icefeather Aven , Alabaster Kirin , Mystic of the Hidden Way , Sultai Scavenger , Goblinslide ...

Too many to list really. Just look up general drafting guidelines, or go look at set reviews for each color in limited.

Try the drafting sim on this site. It will help you get a feel for what others are pulling in their draft, what to expect, what could and could not work, etc. Don't go in with a game plan until you crack that first pack. And don't pull the rare (especially if it's not worth much) just because. Pull it if it works for you. (Disclaimer* Disregard if fetch, PW, and a few moneys, just cuz, hey, trade fodder)

Best thing to do when going into draft this set is try to sick with two enemy colours to begin with. This will give you the power to fall into one of two wedges. Take green and Blue, this lets you go Sultai or Temur.

Thank you for posting. Some of things stated I already knew like with the money cards and all that.

I ended up going Mardu and my pulls were okay. I got a Butcher of the Horde in my first pack which is what stuck me in mardu. I drafted 3 x Molting Snakeskin 3 x Siegecraft a Bloodsoaked Champion 3x Act of Treason and 2x Goblinslide are the most notable. The only issue I had was that 3 other people also went mardu and got a lot more creatures than I did. I lost the first 2 rounds and had a 3rd round bye which basically stuck me outnof prize range.

I learned alot about the set from a drafting standpoint and that, though I love draft, I'm fairly bad at building on the fly.

I did not have a great draft last night myself. No good rare in any of my packs, and found myself once again drafting Jeskai. Only thing is, I was more than a little tired from the work week, not paying attention, and didn't draft more than 10 creatures in my colors. Yay. Went 0-2 and got a bye, also, so there went any hope of a prize. Better luck next time.

The two people I went against both drafted Temur. One decided to go morph heavy, the other had 4 Alpine Grizzly and 2 Heir of the Wilds . By turn 5 I was done, each game, just could not get a counter or my mana pulls.

@Bellock86 Siegecraft is terrible pick in my opinion, expensive and you just ask to be 2-1'ed. Molting Snakeskin can be of use, but I would think 3 times before picking the 3rd one. Even the first needs something to play with. The biggest problem is to keep your bomb (I assume you use it only to save your bomb) alive until your next untap step, and still you need to keep quite a lot of mana open. Act of Treason is really conditional card, I would pick it only for well-tailored aggro or if you're already color committed and there is nothing else for you.

@brainac I don't know about Act of Treason . I've seen it used a few times now in Limited, and when played mid-game on a semi-stagnant board, it's a complete game changer. Every single game I saw it used, the person who used it won in less than 3 turns. It can make or break some games. Though I agree about Siegecraft and Molting Snakeskin .

The number of times I've seen Act of Treason help to win a game is far outweighed by the number of times Ive seen someone draw it, and the opponent board is full of 1/1 or 2/2 and have it basically be a dead card or not a factor. brainac is correct in his assesment of it being a card that is ok to take- when nothing else is available. However picking 3 of them while leaving yourself creature light is probably never going to turn out well.

A quick tip- After each pack, before you open the next one, pick up your pile you've drafted and sort them- creature land others and make some mental notes about what you have and think about where you want to take it.

I see so many people just draft and NEVER look at their pile, while still others that look at their pile while they are thinking about their pick and holding the pack that was just passed to them. (This is not supposed to be allowed)

Im sure some might have photographic memories ect but I cant even begin to count the number of times I've finished a draft and heard people say ok lets see what we've got here....whoops I only picked 8 creatures, or whoops I have no mana fixing

The only time you should cast Act of Treason in triple Khans is to 1.) Kill your opponent, or 2.) take control of a Meandering Towershell FOREVER.

Keep an eye out for Deflecting Palm. For only 2 mana it deflects combat damage back to your opponent. It is a powerful card against anyone playing with large, pumped up creatures. It can also be a great finishing move.

Rush of Battle is totally underrated. It's not Sanctified Charge, but I never lost a game in which I had atleast three creatures (preferably warriors) on board and resolved this.

I won't tell anyone to pick rush high though. It's not necessary, because they're always wheeling around the table with banners. Pick them up and be really happy.
