strip mine / wasteland

is one banned and the other not to limit the amount of LD players can run in a deck?

instead of banning one, can't they just make a rule that will only allow 4 copies in a deck split between the two cards? Would make it easier for some budgeted folk

You realize Strip Mine can hit any land and Wasteland can hit only nonbasics, right? The reason Strip Mine is so cheap is because it's illegal in Legacy.

Furthermore, a rule dictating that you can only run four copies total of cards with similar functionality would be poorly conceived, poorly enforced, and unnecessary in general.

i didn't even catch the "non basic" part. thank you for the clarification. Running my Ghost Quarter for now, until I can pony up $400 for the unsightly commons...

Wasteland is actually an uncommon. The set symbols in Tempest were black for all rarities of cards, just like other older sets.

In most decks that you'll want wasteland against, Ghost Quarter works just fine as a replacement. You don't really want it against like, high tide or goblins for obvious reasons, but against most of the fair 2-3 color decks, you can get away with GQ.

Ghost Quarter has the downside of giving them another land to play with though; Tectonic Edge does a good job as a replacement too but is much, much slower. Basically Strip Mine is far too good and Wasteland is equally nuts and given WoTC (rightfully) doesn't support LD much anymore the substandard variants are the new standard.
